  1. We are looking for procedures or techniques for mixing perfluoropropane for ophthalmologic procedures. How are ophthalmologic gases handled in your OR? Our procedure consists of the following steps: Attach the 60 cc syringe to the stopcock, then the filter, then the gas exchange tubing. The gas meter and the gas is cleared through the tubing until the flow of gas can be determined manually. Gas is allowed to flow into the 60 cc syringe to the desired number of ccs and the gas flow is shut off at the flowmeter. (For 14% use 8.4 cc; for 16% use 9.6 cc; for 20% use 12 cc.) The gas exchange tubing is detached from the 60 cc syringe. The scrub verifies the amount of gas in the syringe and then pulls filtered air for the balance of the syringe. The gas is taken to the sterile field for immediate use. Does anyone have a different or better way of doing this?
