UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Hey all, well we've gotten to it... it starts tomorrow. Anyone planning on meeting tomorrow? I will be getting there for the breakfast they have listed (at least coffee) and look forward to meeting those of you I haven't met yet. It's not hard to miss me, seeing as to how I am 1 of only 22 males in the class. I have dark, short hair, I wear glasses, and (the telling sign) have a small bald spot on the left side of my head (a birthmark). Please come up and introduce yourselves, don't be shy. See you all tomorrow! :mnnnrsngrk:

UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Hey all, been a while since anyone has posted (including me) but just wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year since this coming year is bringing about the start of it all! Can't wait to see everyone next week. Are we going to try and meet up at the orientation? I'll be the one with the 96-ounce cup of coffee! Golden, skill labs will be assigned to us during orientation, meaning you won't know what time your lab is until they tell you next week. See you all soon...

Quick question... anyone else still have the background check hold? I can't seem to get that taken care of yet, just wondering if I'm the only one, I still haven't even received the blue postcard that the Board of Nursing is supposed to send. Let me know...

UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Hey all... Cali, same here, good to meet you. I was surprised at the turnout, there were a lot of people there, although half of them were Graduate students it seemed... yeah it went a little long, I stayed until 6:45 or so, but they answered a lot of questions! Who else from this board was there? They said there are roughly 123 enrolled students for the Spring 2010 program, and of those I am one of only 22 males! The clinical lab area was neat, they demonstrated the mannequins for us, really cool stuff we're getting into. nmy30, as for your question, I didn't have any volunteer experience whatsoever beforehand, just my pre-reqs, your GPA sounds good, just prepare for the TEAS test if you can. If anyone has any questions about what they said, I can answer (ifI remember what they told us hahaha).

UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Hey jklivin, here's the info from the email: "A big congratulation is in order for all of you who were recently admitted to the UT Health Science Center School of Nursing for the Spring 2010 semester. We would like to welcome you to our campus by hosting a Welcome Day on Wednesday, December 2nd. This will be held in the School of Nursing’s Hurd Auditorium from 4-6pm and light refreshments will be served." So the question is how do we identify each other? See you all there!

UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Hey all... out of town here but getting back tomorrow. Cheeky, I think Cali had mentioned meeting up at starbucks after the meet and greet that the school is hosting on December 2. Will you be there? See you all in a couple of days...

This is cool, I look forward to reading these new updates everyday since we are getting closer and closer to it. I still have my immunization hold too CE. I also still have my background hold so I called and they said that they were working on it still but it should be cleared soon. So I haven't gotten any VA notification, which would be cool because I have a strong military background and am familiar with the VA. We'll see... coffee meeting is coming up soon also.

Hi Nurse-Losy, welcome to the board. I think you are the only one so far that I've seen that has been admitted for Graduate studies at UTHSCSA on this thread. From what I've read mostly all of us who have been posting are going into the undergraduate programs, whether it be generic (we don't have a bachelor's degree already) or accelerated (already have a degree, getting a second one in nursing). Good luck to you in your studies!

Cali, when did you get that card? Did you get it in the mail?
-
UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Cali, another question: does it still show a hold for you regarding the background check along with the immunization hold? I know you had your fingerprints done last week, I had mine done last Wednesday yet it still shows a hold for me on the school's website, so I'm just curious since you had yours done a couple of days before me. BOND, when did you send in your intent to enroll form? I think they send the email to activate your online account once they receive that paper.

UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Cali, did you have to do the online modules too? I'm just curious if anyone else got those in their new school email. Cyclical, you finished turning in all your paperwork? How about you Kassiah? Hey Kristy, have you gotten your paperwork yet?

UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Hey cwdoll, when you open your email through login.live.com there should be at least two emails from the school containing "training" modules, such as what to do in the event you get stuck by a needle and also about online security with school computers and such... They're each done online and take about half an hour each to navigate through.

UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Welcome to the board jklivin. Look forward to meeting you.

UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Kristy, that's awesome! Glad to have you as a fellow student! Cali, I got that same email and set up my info. I took the three training courses online already, they took about half an hour each to complete. I turned in all my info today to the health center so I'm done, I hope. Can't wait to meet everyone for coffee...

CWDoll, yeah, generally people who get chickenpox don't have to see a doctor; I grew up on Army bases so going to the military hospitals was always free of charge for us and because of that I have my record of my chickenpox.

UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Hey all... Cali, I went to drop off my immunization sheet also and what do you know, they were closed until Monday, oh well. CE, those are actually inexpensive costs for all those tests/shots that you need when compared to the prices I was quoted at three different clinics. Luckily I have all my medical records and immunization forms dating back to birth and was able to find where I was taken to the hospital for chicken pox, and where I had the Hep B series done for overseas travel. The only tests I had done were for TB and a TdaP booster. Cali, I asked at the Student Health Clinic the other day and the lady told me that since I had my Hep B series done more than ten years ago I DID NOT have to have a titer done; I thought that ten years or more and it would require one, but she said the opposite. I don't know if this means that if you had it done less than ten years ago you need a titer.

UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Hey Cali, I too am turning in my vaccination info tomorrow as soon as I go and get my TB test reading; and thanks for the info on Texas MedClinic. We're not too far off now...CWDoll, I agree with Cali, go with what you think is best for you. I did research on a few schools and ultimately decided on UTHSCSA. Due to this, it was the only school I applied for. Anyway, hope to see you in January. Also, I found a Starbucks right by the school if anyone wants that to be our meeting spot in late November, but any other ideas?

Welcome to the board cheeky and congrats on your acceptance! I know what you mean about the caffeine addiction; if i could I'd have an I.V. inserted for direct coffee injection! Wait a second, as a nurse I'll learn how to do I.V.s, so all I need to do is add the coffee! :smilecoffeeIlovecof Nursing school will serve many purposes apparently...

UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Hey Cali, where did you get your titer/vaccination done? I have all of my shots, just need someone to sign off on the sheet we need to turn in as well as get my TB test done. Thanks!

Kristy, I am so sorry to hear that...

UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Hey Cali, I'm all for meeting up, maybe over a cup of coffee, to get to know any fellow students that want to attend a meet 'n' greet prior to orientation. From what I've read, the orientation consists of some icebreakers in order to get to know others. While I don't have a problem with this (I like to meet new people), I'd prefer to already know some people going into it. We'll play it by ear I suppose... Hey Kristy/AFmed, gotten anything yet? Once you get that acceptance, you're going to have to overnight your paperwork huh...

UTHSCSA spring 2010 hopefuls!
Congrats to rls74, starlight, and andan! Andan, I believe they only have a very limited amount of slots available for the accelerated program (something like 20), and after those are filled they may put people who applied for the accelerated program into the generic program. But like Cali mentioned, the program has been overhauled and therefore I'm not sure what happened there. Maybe a current student could answer this? Mims86, I had read in posts of previous semesters that alternates had gotten in to the program because sometimes this isn't the only school that people apply for and isn't there only choice. Hang in there, we may see you in January!

Winnie, sorry to hear that you won't be our classmate, but happy to hear that you're still going to be a fellow RN. When one door closes, another one opens... Glad to hear that! BOND, I personally don't live in the medical center area so therefore couldn't recommend a complex, I live up by the airport (very nice area, very quiet) and won't mind the commute to school, which is only about 15 minutes.

Congrats to Cali and BOND! Exciting news! Looking forward to meeting you all... Winney, you still waiting for your letter in California? AFmed, we look forward to hearing of your acceptance! Here's wishing you all more luck...
