Can't really say that "drug seeker" has EVER been the first thing that comes to mind when a patient presents at triage with dental complaints. I think that possibly ALL of the dental complaints I've triaged are, in fact, legitimate. The disdain displayed toward this writer's friend is, I believe, out of character for the majority of triage nurses. It also doesn't sound like this patient was ever "triaged" in the real sense of the word. P.S. Hope his tooth is all better.
  2. I think getting "thrown in" is totally inappropriate! And do you really want someone who is "doggie paddling" to care for your child, mother, father, husband in a life threatening situation in the ER? I agree you should not give up, yup...you'll have other bad days...But the personal rewards are so worth it! How would you know this new grad did "just fine"? She's frustrated and unhappy about how the day went (rightfully so) and that makes it NOT just fine. Hope things are looking better this week:)
  3. I agree completely with the other posts. In addition it would have been beneficial for someone in charge who knew you were coming on to a new preceptor to have introduced you and made sure all the details were clear. Even if this sub-preceptor thought you were someone with experience...his job was to make sure you did your job in accordance with the procedures in THAT ED. His liscence is your liscence...what would he have had to say if something had really gone badly? It sounds like you did an amazing job under the circumstances...and remember there are usually other people around who are willing to help out...seek them out...ask for help...go to the person in charge if things are getting out of control. Keep up the good work!
