Independent Contracte Nursing
I have been thinking of going indepedent. Want to here from others that have done this. I have to convince my wife of his. She is a LPN. she is most concerned about several things like 1)Contacting hospitals 2)Income for long term. 3)What can I charge. 4)Cost of medical insurance and will it pay 100% of hospital care 5)Prescription coverge. 6)Disablity coverage. If somebody could give me a breakdown on this it would help me. Example could be for a month what you take in, what goes out, to equal net income after deductions. thanks David Harris RN

Chest Tube Care and Pacer Wires
1) I was all ways taught that plueral CT dressing were to have petrolatum gauze applied to the insertion site to ensure a seal and the dressing was to be tight to prevent air leaks. To achevie this we use cloth tape to cover the 4X4s. The reason I asK is that I recevied a PT from a OHR unit and the site was exposed open to air, no petrolatum gauze to be found and the dressing was losely applied with plastic tape coming off. Please inform me hoe it is done on other units and if possible a rersouce for your standard. 2) Same patient. What is your policy on wraping and grounding External pacer wires status post Open Heart Surgery and a Resouce place. This PT had both Atrial wires inserted in to a cut off finger of a glove and the same for the Ventrical wires I was taught that all four wires had to be wrapped seperately. Reason I ask that my supervisor has ask me to file a incident report on it. I want to know what is the current Standard so I can learn from it to. Thanks

ADN wants to teach
I am experienced nurse with a AD in nursing. I have been teaching BLS and ACLS for Years and I want to expand my options in teaching. I have ICU experience and also Medical Rehabilitation experience. I have been a preceptor for new and experienced nurses allso. Please donot advise me to get my BSN, I know this would be the best way. I am open to any teaching options. Got any ideas. I looked onto teaching Nursing assistant classes but most want experience in a long term facility and LPNs want you to be a bSN Patient education or staff education. I enjoy teaching especially cardiac but like I said I am open to ideas.

Pacemakers and Nitropaste
First let me clarify a few things for you 1-The function of the pacer is to maintain a heart rate that will perfuse the body when the underlying arrthymia fails to do this. This should maintain a good BP. 2- The nitro past is for prevention of angina, it can cause a drop in in the BP. You should not remove the nitro past because of the HR thats not what it is for. So what should if you do. I t depends on a few things. IF the SBP is ok > 100 Do not remove the Past IF the SBP As long as the patient remains stable, NO S/S angina, MI, or CHF, Leave on and notify the DR. If unsable with S/S angina, MI, or CHF. Remove the past and Stat page the Doctor for orders. You did not mention what the BP is or the condition of the patient in question. I hope this helps

Medication Errors: What happen to you because of it?
I am a experienced nurse of 18 years plus. I have all ways turned myself in, because I want to protect my patient. When I received a warning letter (incorrect setting of IV Pump, I could not prove it was not me) and than it turned to probation and if a medication error happen again I would be suspended of fired. So I left there. Could not work under that pressure. I went to another hospital and got a warning letter for giving the patient the wrong meds(No complication), I turned my self in for this all so. Approximately 3-4 weeks latter I turned my self in again for error in Insulin dosage again I was concerned about my patient and turned in. I was called at home and was fired. Talk about feeling down I was. Just bought a new House and was off work, worked sparing with Nurse agency approximately 6 months. Working again where I left in a different department in the hospital I left. Things are better for now. Because of my experience I have been a perceptor and a resource for other less experienced nurses on my current unit. I believe the IV pump may have malfunctioned (cell phone). and second was due to poor staffing. Good or bad lets here about it .

Experienced and underpaided
I am a experienced Nurse at CAMC 20+ years at this place. I have been a NA, EMT, LPN, a medic and a RN in the USAF, which I am retired from now. I also have been teaching BLS, First Aide and ACLS. I have worked in the Nursing Feild since about 1973. I have a AD form UC 1985. I let CAMC 1 year a go to Putman Hospital to work and started with a increase in pay to $23 and I then returned to CAMC. Now woking Nights here just over $23 with $1 on the hour = $24. To make more money at CAMC your most Level, check out the additional pay raise you can get at their web site. I have choose not to do this because you end up doing additional papperwork and spending less time at the bed side and additional time on time off to maintaine it. There is no pay diffence for BSN, but it will give you more options. I am frequenly looked over because I have not leveled or have a BSN. My complain is that of SOME nurse managers with ADN, coworkers with a BSN or coworkers that has leveled are very pore managers or ineffective as bedside nurses. I just want have a chance to prove I should be paid more. To kept my pay I say where I am at. I have a varied experienc due to working here, LPN-Med/Surg, RN-Med/Sur, Medical ICU, IV Therapy, Surgery, Medica Rehab, CCU and Telemetry. I kept looking for options to vary my experince. Overall CAMC is good place to work.I am open to options of any kind in WV to increase my pay even to leave CAMC again if means better money and benifits. Why do I stay, My family and home is here. I am looking at working idependently, work at home , starting a business, inserviceing others on medical equipment, teaching BLS/ACLS or just anything. I just want to use my nursing experienc. Drop a line for more info or if you got any ideas.
