  1. Don't give up! Mamas and babies need more people like you advocating for them! It enrages me too. My background is in Peds but my goal is to become a CNM. I just finally landed an L&D job. I knew going in that there would be frustrating moments and that I would see lots of things that are not right and are not based in evidence. BUT I am hoping that I can maintain my sanity and continue to make a difference for those who I can. Every little bit helps! If you leave, that is one less person who will stand up for what is right. You did nothing wrong. It sounds like that OB just doesn't really give a toot. That is so sad:( Don't let it get to you, though! You stood up for your patient and for what is right and for what you believe! Educating our patients is key, too. When women think they want to be done with pregnancy "due to discomfort" - we need to educate them about all the risks of laboring before the body is ready and all the risks and illnesses associated with prematurity. I hope you are feeling better. Be sure to take care of yourself and don't give up!
  2. I agree with all those who replied to you before me. HANG IN THERE! It takes a while to get comfortable in any nursing job as a new grad. It took over a year for me in my first job. My first job was a very busy Peds Med/Surg unit and I cried on the way home regularly and I was still in my 20s:). It was hard work and the learning curve was huge. There is a ton to learn in L&D and even if your heart leads you to BC or Home birth eventually, this experience will serve you well in that. You definitely need to give it more time before you will know whether it's just that you are a new nurse or if it is the actual specialty that's not right. Chances are it's just the usual growing pains we all go through at the beginning of our careers! Good Luck to you:)
  3. Umm. I am not that familiar with Swedish Covenant but pretty much ALL hospitals hire new grads at some point in time. No one would ever get to the one year mark if they didn't;) Even in this time of bad economy / hiring freeze - there are still new grad jobs available at many hospitals. There may be a little less available but they are out there.
  4. caitiecait, thanks for this thread! It is just what I was looking for. I am thinking of applying to the midwifery program at Frontier and I have only heard good things about the school until this post from CoastNP also. I am eager to hear the answers to your questions and any further info anyone can offer about the school and their programs. Thanks!
