New grad L&D interview help?
We had a seminar with HR reps at our school. Here's some of the wisdom they gave us that day...Hope it helps!!! They said most questions will be behavioral. How do you handle a conflict? What if you overhear someone criticizing the care you've given with another nurse? What if you hear two employees discussing specific pt information in the cafeteria? What if you see someone diverting medications? Keep your answers patient-centered. You might also get get-to-know-you questions like "Why L&D?" "Why nursing?" Be yourself, too. If it's a panel interview, they are looking to see if you are someone that they want to work with.

OB RN's and liability coverage
I will have to look at that website. Thanks for the replies! I have been told, no matter what area of nursing, that it is wise to carry your own insurance.

OB RN's and liability coverage
I was told by another nurse that OB nurses can be held liable for their newborn patients for up to 21 years? And that an OB nurse would have to keep liability coverage for 21 years into retirement? Can anyone shed some light on this? (She was taught this at a nursing and law seminar put on by a reputable nursing program!) I am almost done with nursing school and have an interview for a graduate nurse L&D position. I would like to know if this is true.

Need your opinions
I agree with the others...include it. I had the same question about my volunteering with LLLI before I applied for a position in Women's Services. It turned out to be a plus and show my passion for this area of nursing!

What is a typical night shift like in LTC
I worked nights in a SNF for a while as a CNA. It can be quite busy. You might think the residents sleep at night, but many of them do not. There are frequent calls for BRP, meds, can't sleep, etc. As a CNA, I spent most of the night taking residents to the restroom and checking, changing, and repositioning those who could not do these things themselves. It's a busy time with some down times. There are usually other responsibilities that the night shift is assigned to do.

I'm going into my last semester, in a couple of weeks, and I am REALLY excited!!! It will be an intense semester, but it is going to go fast!

Thinking ahead about job search...stay where I am?
That's a great point!

Thinking ahead about job search...stay where I am?
Thanks! I keep thinking going back and forth. And it's really hard to say what things will be like in one year, two years, etc, also. Do you think that a year's experience in Med-Tele/Med-Surg is a good foundation? It used to be the recommendation, but in recent years, some new grads go right into specialties. I'm thinking it's good experience.

Thinking ahead about job search...stay where I am?
I graduate from a BSN program Jan 2011. I am doing very well in school. I have worked as a CNA for over three years and will continue to do so until I am a graduate nurse. I work in a small hospital (48 beds) on a Medical/Telemetry unit in a metropolitan area. My employer is favorable to keeping me as an RN, if I wish. Given factors like the current economy, my good academic record, and my desire to work somewhere more diverse than where I am, should I stay where I am when I become an RN and gain some basic experience or look for a larger hospital with more opportunities??? I would love to work in a teaching hospital since there are so many learning opportunities! The hospital where I currently work is quite limited in the types of patients we see and the procedures we perform or assist with. I appreciate all input!!!
