  1. Just lost my second R.N. job. I made a med error and reported it. It was a really stupid error...I gave darvocet off someone else's card instead of darvon in a totally distracted moment. They fired me the next day after only one month on the job. I lost my first position after being passed through six preceptors, receiving a good evaluation in which the floor manager said that there were only good reports about my work and personality. I was called into the office two weeks later by the lower floor manager to be told that I was not fitting in and let go during the middle of my shift. My sixth preceptor kept laundry lists of any misstep that I made and reported it to this manager. I feel like I am a total failure and that all of the years of school were for nothing. That is on my bad days...lots of them lately!!!

Teensmom, Keep fighting, as long as you still have your job you are still in good shape. Document everything, on paper, and then...if you do get pulled into the manager's office, at least you will have something to say. I do agree that these things always take you off guard (ie; the preceptor yelling at you) and it is difficult to reply when you are so surprised at what is actually happening. I had a bad experience and if I ever get another chance this is what I would do differently. I hope it helps you. Another second career, new grad nurse.
