Hello everyone! I just completed a cna course a few months ago and recently passed my state exam. I became eager to work as a cna mainly to gain experience as a premed. However, in the past few months, I've developed moderate back problems that stems from a back injury received as a child. As a result, I will have a difficult time performing any work in nursing homes or hospitals seeing that the work will be too strenuous for me and may worsen my condition. My question is are there any jobs where I can use my certificate to work in a position that is not as demanding? Or do you think it would be best for me to not work as a CNA at all? I don't want to feel as if I've wasted my $600 on the training course only to find out that I cant put my certificate to good use. Should I become a phlebotomist instead? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I just finished a CNA course in nyc and will be taking the state exam for my license in January or February. I was told that some nursing facilities could hire me on a conditional basis provided that I earn my license within a few months after hiring me. I am having a difficult time finding these facilities as most places including agencies tell me that I need the license first. Since I go to school full time, I wanted to work with agencies because I think they're probably more flexible with scheduling. Are there any agencies or facilities in the ny area that are willing to provide placement for CNA's who have not taken the state exam yet, specifically in westchester county? Thanks!

I just completed my CNA training at New York Institute of Medical Careers in Woodside. The course is under $600 and can be completed in a short period of time. I don't work for the school and I found the training to be pretty good and inexpensive compared to other schools in the area. They also offer an ekg/phlebotomy course as well. Good luck to everyone!

I've just enrolled in a CNA program in NY and have completed my first week. My ultimate goal is to work in a hospital as a patient care technician and the same school that is offering the CNA course has a combined EKG/Phlebotomy certificate as well. Seeing that my objective is to work in a hospital setting, should I bother spending extra money and taking this course after I complete the CNA program? Is this extra certification necessary to work in a hospital or do most hospitals train the nurse's aides to perform pct skills regardless and don't view it as a necessity? In other words, would the extra certification be necessary and worth it in the long run? Thanks for the feedback :)

Do you have to be a nyc resident to apply to the adult learning centers and hhc program? I live in westchester county.

Right now I'm in school taking prereqs for nursing programs in my area (NY) and will be training to become an hha in a few weeks. I've never done this type of work before and mainly want to be able to see what I'm getting myself into before nursing school. I really want to work in an assisted living setting because it seems very laid back and the facilities in my area are always hiring for caregivers. My question is, how is it working as an hha in assisted living?? Is it stressful and is it difficult? Or is it better than doing home cases? Also, are most facilities understanding of students who are in school and willing to work with them? Thanks for your help

What are the prereqs for cnr and does anyone have info on their grade retake policy? I live near new rochelle and my gpa isnt the best right now but I plan on spending some time in school retaking a few classes to boost it and am interested in applying in a few semesters.

If anyone is interested try Dorothea Hopfer in Mount Vernon, NY and Cochran school of nursing in Yonkers. Both schools are in Westchester county and may be a commute depending on where you live but they both offer spring admissions and the deadlines have not passed as of yet. Both schools have open houses on June 16 if you're interested. Best of luck!

Mr. Pink, I took the test on May 12th and they do send rejection letters to those who failed the test and didn't get into the first round. I received mine a week after I took the test and know 2 others who received a letter also. You should be fine with those scores though. Good luck!

What are some of the prereqs for this program? I've tried looking them up online but they are in the process of upgrading their website. I currently go to CUNY Hostos but I can't apply to their RN program since I didnt pass a few prereqs. I would like to apply for fall of next year.

Thank you. Wow I wasn't aware that the application deadline for the 2012 program was that early! I assumed it may have been in early 2012! I hadn't applied yet because I know one of the requirements is to have college chemistry as well as algebra completed and I had planned on taking them at my local cc this fall since I had not taken those courses in high school. I would really love to get into this program next year but now I'm a bit nervous...any suggestions? Do they look at college gpa as well?

Sorry for bringing up an old thread. What score do you need on the NLN for entrance into the program and do they look at previous college gpa for admissions?

I'm interested in applying for the Fall 2012 program and on the website it says you would need to have completed 1 yr of high school chemistry but I never took it in high school. I also took only prealgebra in my HS. Will the school deny my application if I apply without these on my HS trancsript? Also, do they factor in your college gpa for admissions? Just curious :)

I just received my results earlier today and found out i didnt get over 50 percentile. I did good in reading and language but horribly in math ugh. Does anyone know of any programs in the area that have january admissions for their programs?

Hey MrPink! I would like to be in the day program also. I work in the evenings and it would give me the opportunity to attend school in the daytime then go to work right after. I would only be working 3 nights a week however, not everyday since that would be too much for me lol

Hello everyone. I've recently taken a break from school due to working but plan on enrolling in an LPN-RN bridge program this fall. I wanted the opportunity to work as a home health aide/companion part time while in school so that I could gain valuable experience and I have always loved the laid back one-to-one nature of the job. I've contacted home care agencies and discovered that most offer training for free. Most are offered from 9-5 and last for about a month, which would probably be an issue for me considering that I work during the evenings with my shifts starting at 3pm. Does anyone know of any programs in the lower westchester/nyc region of NY that may offer free hha/pca training on the weekends or even programs that offer it for 2-3 weeks or maybe even on the job training?? Also would anyone know of information on how to obtain grants to help with affording LPN school?? I'm just so excited and obviously anxious to get started on this career after a long delay. Any advice is always appreciated and thanks so much in advance :).

Has anyone ever gone to any of the cuny schools for their cna classes? I was looking into hostos program but wanted to find out more info from people who actually took classes from cuny first before I start.

About 5 years ago at the age of 16, I was charged with petit larceny(retail theft). It was a misdemeanor, but the charges were dropped and I was never convicted. Since then I've changed and matured immensely, and I even ended up working for the same company that I originally stole from . I am now interested in being a nurse's aide, but I'm afraid that I won't become certified or find employment in any nursing home because of this mistake that happened years ago. I've tried contacting several nursing boards and registries but nobody can seem to give me a clear answer on this matter. Does anyone have any advice on this situation or gone through a similar situation and was able to overcome it? Thanks so much for your time and help.
