Caliotter, have you tried using craigslist? I've had luck using that site in the past for jobs. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and shedding some light on this matter for me. I'm down, but I'm going to keep pushing for work.

Thanks everyone for your replies and advice. I am not working for Maxim. I have heard some unflattering things about that company, and another Pedi PDN company called First Choice, so I am steering clear of both. I am working for a regional company here in Texas. I was hired full-time for a certain case, but it didn't work out because the foster parents apparently decided, they didn't care for another nurse. I had no intention of being PRN because it's not consistent hours. I am not picky about what kind of cases or shifts I take. My first shift was 11pm to 7am, second and third were 6am to 10pm. Caliotter (from California?), I have had the same suspicions as you, that there is a problem that the company is not being straightforward about. I was thinking that the recruiter/ scheduler girls didn't like me for something I did or said. So, they are purposely not giving me work to force me to quit. Recruiters/ schedulers have the power to assign you over someone else. If that's the case, that's really vicious of them to kill my livelihood to the point where I wonder if I can afford groceries. But, I'd really like to think that the office people are mature adults who aren't so conniving and malicious. I'm in the process of being hired with another company, so hopefully this will one will work out better for me.

Hi fellow nurses! I've been working in pedi PDN for about a year. In June, I resigned from my previous position because I thought I had found a place where the grass was greener. To my utter surprise and dismay, the new agency has given me 3 shifts in the last 3 weeks, and I was hired as FULL TIME! I feel that I have been misled, because the recruiter gave me the impression that I would be working full-time hours. This agency gives referral bonuses, so I thought that that meant they're short on nurses, and have an abundance of work. I have no idea about the business aspect of home health, but I was just wondering why would an agency even bother hiring me, if there is no work for me? I call the scheduling coordinators about 3 times a week to ask about assignments. Usually I get the response, "I'll check on it and give you a call." Then, I don't get a call! The only times I have gotten an assignment, is when I went to the office and got in their faces. To me, it just doesn't add up, so I am hoping someone can give me an explanation, so I can better understand my mind boggling situation.

Greetings luvmyguys, and B.A. LVN, I'm a new grad class of May '09. I passed my boards in early July, and really have my heart set on a pedi private duty job. Me + any time in the hospital = just not going to happen. It's too much for me to take; running all day, no time to take care of my own needs, and then, when the day ends, it feels like I got nothing done. Not my cup of tea. I'm just not sure what company/ agency is willing to give me a chance, rather than think hiring me is an expensive mistake. So, it looks like you guys already have jobs lined up in the specialty I want from what I've read in your posts. Care to share what companies you are working for? Thanks, and let's KIT :nuke:

Hi everyone, I am a long-time reader of the threads on allnurses, but this is the first one I have started myself. In in the beginning of May, I will be completing the requirements for my ADN, and probably taking the NCLEX in late June, or early July. I intend to relocate to Austin from San Antonio, since my boyfriend has already been working there for a little over a year, and we plan to build a life together. From what I have been hearing on the news about the current economy, companies are streamlining, trying to cut costs right now, rather than hiring. On top of that, I know that many people desire to live in Austin, making entry-level jobs very competitive, and that does not help my cause either. The question I have, is; are any of you, perhaps December grads, having luck finding work in Austin Texas? I am not looking to work at any of the hospitals there; Seton, or SD's, because I am not built for the face pace, and it would just be a recipe for disaster. Any replies will be much appreciated, Thanks.

Does anyone know of a job that, while perhaps monotonous is rather "safe" and "easy"? ...A job that isn't some holy grail that I have to have 15 years of experience and a gray head of hair to have? I'm a student, so I'm unable to tell you from firsthand experience what jobs I know to be "safe" and "easy," but I'm not a completely unaware first year either, so my suggestions are somewhat informed. - According to a friend, insurance companies, like Humana hire nurses as clinical advisors, and she has described that job as "boring." - I knew of a couple that both graduated with BSNs, but did not go into nursing: One became a pharmaceutical sales rep, the other, a Clinical Research Associate (CRA). CRA is not a clinical job either. They go to Phase I-IV sites to ensure standard operating procedures, and protocols are adhered to. Other possibilities: - Sleep lab - Dermatologist Office - Health Educator - School, or camp nurse - Blood Bank Consent Coordinator - Electroconvulsive Therapy - Travel Medicine Clinic I hope that helps. I have also been scouring the job ads for a job that is a good fit with my personal strengths, and low boiling point for stress. Good Luck, and please let all us curious cats know where you end up.
