I am thinking about travel nursing and I received an offer to travel to a med/surg floor in Augusta, GA at a VA hospital. The offer is: hourly pay rate: 25.86 HWB: 4.02 Holiday pay: .99 Total hourly rate: 30.87 Travel Pay: 0.55/mile up to $250 maximum Per diem weekly: $300 based on 40 hours per week Estimated weekly housing costs: $200 This is for 3 months. I only want to work 36hours/week. Does this look good or bad? What should I ask to get changed? I do not want to work overtime. My purpose for traveling is to experience the area not to make a lot of money! But I need enough to live off of and to pay my mortgage in Denver. Also I am confused about housing. Does this mean they are giving me housing or I have to find my own? Thanks for your help! Monica
  2. Just wondering when everyone learned where their first duty station was going to be. How soon after commissioning? Or did most of you have to wait until OBC? Also when did you learn what floor or clinic you were to work on? Did you have any options or were you just told where you were going? And is there any difference between new nurses and nurses with experience? One more-is there a list of the forts we can choose from as an experienced nurse? Thanks.
  3. Thanks-I already have that angle covered. My recruiter is on leave for a bit so I thought I would see if I could get any help on here. I just wanted to get this done by the time he gets back so I can turn it all in.
  4. Hi, I am trying to get my packet together and I have a few questions. Regarding the resume, do I add all the jobs I have ever had or do I only put my nursing job in there? (I became a nurse at 33, so I had many jobs before that, and only one nursing job since graduation). For the letter of motivation and intent. Is this suppose to be addressed to someone or do I just title the page, write a few paragraphs and then sign it? Thanks for your help.
  5. Thank you so much for your reply. Your experience sounds a little bit like what I was thinking about doing. I work at the VA now on a surgery floor, which I love. I have talked to the healthcare recruiter some, but before I go back to him I want to have everything figured out for myself and all my paperwork finished. Right now I am in the process of going back to school to get my BSN, I should be done with that in Oct. So what I have been thinking about is doing the reserves in the APMC and using the STRAP program. Then I would volunteer to be activated for a year CONUS. And if I liked that then I would go active from there and if I didn't like it I would just stay in the reserves. On the other hand I could just go active as soon as I get my BSN. Then I could do public health nursing which isn't offered in the reserves. But my concern is what if I don't like being active. The only time I was active as an enlisted was when I volunteered for 2 deployments, which for the most part I loved because I got to get to know some of the greatest people, and those people are what makes me think that I would like being active. I just think I have a lot more thinking to do. As of right now I am leaning more toward active but who knows what tomorrow will bring. Any more thoughts you or anyone else would like to share with me would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah a few questions for you. If I decided to go active when would I know where I would be stationed after OBLC? Do you know how hard it is to get into the public health course? In my CV do I need to just put my nursing experience or do I put all my work experience on there? (I started nursing in my 30's, so lots of jobs before that). Again, thanks for your help.
  6. I was wondering if anyone that has been both active and reserve could give me the pros and cons of being a nurse in both. I was enlisted reserves for 8 years and now I am considering going back in as a nurse but I can't decide if I want to go active or reserves. Any input would be great:D.
