  1. Really? No Knoxville nurses? That's okay though- I finally had some luck and have some interviews scheduled. If anyone else is job hunting around Knoxville, I highly recommend Covenant Health. The recruiters have been awesome- they are great about returning calls/e-mails, unlike some other places that have been unresponsive or even downright rude.
  2. I recently graduated from an ADN program and got my license, and I will be moving to the Knoxville area soon. I have not had much luck with job hunting so far- does anyone have any advice for finding a job around Knoxville? I have applied with Covenant and UT but I can't seem to get any interviews. Since I went to nursing school outside of Knoxville, I don't really have any connections up there. Any help/advice would be appreciated!
  3. Does anyone know about the pediatric RN Internship program at LeBonheur Children's hospital in Memphis? Like how to apply, qualifications and all of that. I will be graduating from an ASN program soon and I would LOVE to work there someday, but I haven't been able to get much information on it. Has anyone been an intern/extern at Le Bonheur or started working there as a new grad? If so- I'd love to know how it went for you-- Any info would be much appreciated :)
  4. Thank you boyfactory! That is really reassuring :-) And here I've been freaking out about it...you'd think I would know better than to rely on the rumor mill for accurate info. My dream job would be to work at LeBonheur and I was absolutely crushed to 'find out' that I couldn't work there without a BSN. I guess I still have a chance... you just made my day!
  5. I took micro at Southwest and had a great experience. It's not an easy class by any means, but our class size was pretty small (about 20 students- I took it in the summer) and the teacher was great- very one-on-one. I don't know about U of M, but I would recommend Southwest.
  6. That's probably what I will end up doing. I plan on really really trying to find a job after graduation, but if I don't have any luck after a few months of job hunting, I'll go ahead and start on my BSN. I really need to be working though... pay the bills and all that. I went through the ASN program because it was the quickest way (I thought) to get an RN job. But who knows- I haven't given up hope yet.:-)
  7. I will be graduating from an ASN program in December, and that had been my thinking. I figured I would get a job and then continue my education, but I'm starting to wonder if I made a big mistake and should have just gone straight for a BSN. I just recently went to a job fair and now I am terrified that I won't be able to find a job after graduation. Methodist-Lebonheur recruiters made it very clear that they are going Magnet and had no interest in even speaking to ASN students- I got the brush off big time. According to the recruiters, Methodist University and Lebonheur Children's are not and will not be hiring any more ASN new grads- and the associates already working there have 3 years to get their BSN or they will be out too. Methodist North and South may be hiring associates grads, and I have several classmates who are externs there and have been offered jobs when they graduate. St. Francis is a Magnet hospital and will not hire ASN nurses.... I haven't talked to anyone from Baptist, but it's looking like a hospital job is going to be pretty hard to come by- the Med has been the only promising place I've looked into.
  8. I was having problems remembering all the rounding rules, so I mad this cheat sheet... hope it helps! :-) Injections: When giving more than 1 mL: Calculate to the hundredth and round to the tenth: 1.26 mL = give 1.3 mL 1.75 mL = give 1.8 mL Injections: When giving less than 1 mL: Calculate to the thousandth and round to the hundredth: 0.823 mL = give 0.82 mL 0.666 mL = give 0.67 mL Oral Medications: SCORED Tablets Calculate to the tenth and round to the nearest half tablet: 1.5 tablets = give 1 1/2 tablets 1.7 tablets = give 2 tablets Oral Medications: ALL other oral pills Calculate to the tenth and round to the whole number: 1.4 tablets = give 1 tablet 1.9 tablets = give 2 tablets Oral Medications: Oral LIQUIDS: Calculate to the hundredth and round to the tenth: 2.32 mL = give 2.3 mL 2.36 mL = give 2.4 mL IV Problems: When calculating drops or drop factor: Calculate to the tenth and round to the whole number: 4.4 gtt/min = give 4 gtt/min IV Problems: When calculating mg/min, mcg/hr, mL/hr , units/mL Calculate to the hundredth and round to the tenth: 1.45 mg/min = give 1.5 mg/min 20.25 mcg/hr = give 20.3 mcg/hr 2.12 mL/hr = give 2.1 mL/hr 20.35 units/mL= 20.4 units/mL Adult Body Weight: Calculate to the hundredth and round to the tenth: 7.35 kg = 7.4 kg
  9. Well $35 isn''t too bad- I was thinking it'd be a lot more. Thats actually cheaper than any of the other things. I'm taking the "CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Health Care Provider or Lifeguard" class at the red cross- http://www.midsouthredcross.org
  10. I know we have to have our physical (my appt is tomorrow), and CPR certification (doing that saturday) and background check (I did the mybackgroundcheck.com one) all before orientation- does anyone know anything about the drug test? Does that have to be done and get the results before the 7th too? or just have it done before classes start? After paying for all the other stuff, I am seriously broke until my excess financial aid check comes in. Anyone know how much it costs?
  11. Congratulations to you both!!! It feels good to know that you guys are as excited as I am :-) Jenn- that's terrible- I really hope you can work something out. I've heard of so many people who have had problems with hospital employers not wanting to accommadate employees going back to school...even the places that have excellent tuition programs and like to emphasize the importance of continuing education for employees, etc, etc. I don't know why they make it so difficult-
  12. I got a call today- I'm in!!! I wasn't expecting to hear from them yet- I'm so excited! SO hang in there- everyone should start to get their acceptance calls.... finally...
  13. Same here! I think I have a pretty good chance of being accepted, but you never know... SWTCC was the only program that I applied to, so if I don't get in I'll be absolutely devestated (I'm sure everyone feels that way too) But yeah- November is taking forever an a day to get here. My luck, they'll wait til the end of November- just to torture us :-)
  14. You should look into Southwest Community College- that's where I've been taking my pre-reqs. They have open acceptance and will help you figure out what your skills levels are and what courses would be appropriate to get you on your way. Plus, it's pretty inexpensive compared to other colleges around memphis, and they're great about getting you financial aid. They have a great 2 year Rn program, so they can tell you exactly what you need to do if getting an associates is your goal.
  15. Anyone applying for Spring 2010? I just turned in my application for the program at Southwest Tennessee Community college- now I just have to sit back and wait... The anticipation is killing me!!
