Excuse me, but ALL staff need to answer the call lights. And for the record, I never talk on my cell phone during work hours. They aren't allowed on the floor anyway. you don't give a "rat's butt about call lights"????? That just seems wrong to me, those are you're patients to begin with! You are just as obligated to answer those lights as the aide is!! I am sorry for all the aides that are on their phones, if that is the case, it would seem that you need to address this issue with the upper management to put a stop to it. I hope you are not one of those "snooty" nurses.

I am currently a CNA, as I await my entrance into the Nursing Program. I have seen some pathetic CNAs, and some pathetic Nurses as well. I too have had a nurse go from room to room looking for me just for something stupid. In the time the nurse took to look for me, she could have done it herself. But, for the most part, the nurses are really good, and they will get in and help with patient care as well. There are always a few nurses that seem to think that they are beyond performing any menial tasks. :angryfire At the hospital I work at, we are very team oriented. In other words, the nurses are not above the cna's nor are the cna's beneath the nurses. Yes, I view the nurses I work with as my immediate supervisor, but their authority only goes as far as patient care. It really does make for a good relationship, we are all very happy employees for the most part. I do have a great deal of respect for the nurses, as they really have alot on their plate on any given day. At least the CNAs can have some down time, but generally not the nurses. They are always hitting the ground running. So, I am kind of glad that as an aide, I can somehow make their day a little bit smoother, as I will be in the nurse's shoes before long. :) Good luck to all!

To JadedNurse, OOOOH! Looks like I struck a nerve on that one!:chuckle This just goes to prove my point.....this is a power-trip issue. A few RNs on this forum like to feel like they part of an elite group, looking down their noses on anyone ranking below them. Were you ever a CNA? I think CNAs are very important to the RNs. What would they do without them? I am sure there are those CNAs who have made a bad name for the title I suppose, But I have no intention of being that person. I am heading the RN program next year if all goes as I have planned. I really hate the attitude I am seeing here coming from "professionals", RNs. Sure, we do work under the RNs, LPNs and cooperate accordingly. But I'll be damned if I will let some stuck-up RN look down on me simply because of "status" issues. Give me a break:)

Seems to me that a few of the RNs on this forum are on some kind of a power trip! Again, we just need to respect each others positions. I don't think that is too much to ask.

I have to disagree with the CNAs not looking at patients charts-In my current training as a CNA, our instructor says that she expects us to be familiar with the PT charts. She says it is important for us to know what is going on with the PT. We will also be expected to document everything on the same chart the nurses use. Maybe the laws differ from state to state, and agency to agency. After all, as CNAs, why should we not know what is on the charts? CNAs are giving most of direct PT care anyway, it would only make sense that we are familiar with the situation as well. Now, that is not to say that I would unecessarily look at a chart, or nose in to family conversations, etc. I know as a CNA what my boundaries will be. And yes, the nurse does have the final say regarding PT care(aside from the doctor, of course), I would never try to act as though I have just as much authority as the nurse. Whatever is happening at that one facility with CNAs running the show, needs to be stopped. CNAs do not have the training nurses do, and legally have no right to assume any authority at all. There is such a risk to the patients as well. I am on my way to becoming an RN, and as hard as we have to work for our degrees, and the knowledge that comes with it, no RN should be bullied by a CNA. Totally unethical behavior. I do hope, however, that during my employment as a CNA, I will be respected by the RNs, I have heard horror stories about RNs treating CNAs really bad as well. We all need to respect each others positions, or there will be no such thing as teamwork. Just my 2-cents worth. Thanks, Mylissa

Hello everyone, Just thought I would introduce myself. My name is Mylissa, and I am currently in the CNA program preparing for a career as an RN. I stumbled on to this forum and found it very enlightening! I think the CNA training will really help me prepare for life as a nurse. I am so looking forward to it, as I have been in school doing prereqs for almost 2 years. At the college I attend, nursing students are chosen on a points system. If I score high enough on the NLN, as well as completed all point earning classes, the better chance you have at getting in. So, I will be working hard the next several months preparing for the exam. Does anyone out there have any advice for me as far as the NLN exam is concerned, and also, tell me how you enjoy your career as a nurse? Look forward to hearing from you! Thanks, Mylissa:D
