I wonder what your morals were when you decided to go into nursing I agree with the previous post, flu shots??? You need more than just a few additional certifications and at least some more CLINICAL experience.....there's always DON, DSD, MDS coordinator, Case Manager??....But from my experience, in my facility anyway, even they dig in and get there hands dirty every once in a while. Everything else like teaching, Health Care informatics, Administrator, Legal Nurse Consultant.....I believe these positions require more education??? Not exactly sure though.... But there's a lot of other routes to take as far as Non-clinical....just search Google, they have good info...Good Luck!!!:)

Hello all of my fellow nurses!!! I just reached a dilemma and wanted some much needed advice......well here goes my story. I'm a LVN/PN and have been for about 4 years now and I'm really ready to go back to school. I'm really young because I had the opportunity to start and complete a LVN/PN program really early but I am married and have a 2 year old son. My husband is military and we relocated from the East Coast to California a few years ago. To make a long story short.....we're having issues and currently separated and I'm doing it all on my own now. He only pays the rent so as far as all of the other bills and taking care of my baby...it's really becoming to be a struggle for me. I'm all set up to hopefully start school in the next 2 months but now I'm wondering if that is such a good idea. I'm wondering now is that really the responsible thing to do, and considering my circumstances, should I just get up and go to find a job? Also since I am a military spouse the choices of schools were limited to me so I decided to go to Kaplan/Maric college here in San Diego. I know about all the bad reviews they have and yadda, yadda, yadda but I really like the school. And it won't be that expensive for me because they now offer military discount, I get a discount for being a LVN and also completing most of my pre-requisites, I'll get a lot of grants and since I'm a LVN and have most of my Pre-reqs done.....I could be finish in just a little over a year. SOOOOO.......the school isn't really a issue for me. The dilemma that I am facing is......am I being dumb and irresponsible for sitting around just waiting for school to start while my soon to be ex husband is only paying the rent? Should I just get over going to school and go find a job so I can support myself and my son better? What do you think?......Because I'm really confused :-(

Thanks LatinaVNStudentRN2! Kaplan was actually the school that I had in mind but it just has sooo many negative reviews, I was having second thoughts. I just don't know how I will pay for a degree that's so expensive but I'll figure it out. I'm actually going to give them a call tomorrow and see if I can stop by to speak to an admissions representative. californiamalelpn, I don't remember exactly what website I used to apply for the San Diego Dept of Corrections LVN job. I just googled it and found it.

Thank you guys for all of your quick replies! I did receive my education in the US. What I meant is that I graduated from a school outside of San Diego, which was in Chicago. I have all of my Licenses and certifications here in San Diego, so that's not a problem for me. I have also tried the correctional facilities as well, they say that I am not qualified enough (I guess that's their way of saying that they want a year experience, I don't now). I tried home health also but they require a year experience as well. LatinaVNStudentRN2B, thanks for your advice! I'm definitely going to keep following up with people to let them know how serious I am and how bad I really want to work! I'm considering just going back to school to transition to RN because with all the time that I am wasting trying to find a job, I could be almost half way there. But....That's just another problem that San Diego has, the wait list here are really long for RN schools and the schools that don't have wait list are toooo expensive. And Honestly, I really need a job because I really need the money. It's all really confusing!! I hope there's something that I'm missing so that I can find a job soon.

hello everyone, i know that this is a topic that has been discussed a few times, or at least attempted to be, but i've searched and searched these forums a million times with no help. my question to everyone is "does anyone get a job as a new-grad lvn here in san diego"? my husband has been stationed here in san diego since january now and i have exhausted all of my options and resources (at least the ones that i know about). i applied just about everywhere that i can think of, including all the hospitals, ltc, snf, clinics, mental health facilities, even the va medical center and military hospitals where i get spousal preference, all with no luck. i also went to my local navy fleet and family support center to get help with writing my resume and to do mock interviews. i didn't recieve my nursing education here, so i have no option to go see a career counselor or anything. i've walked in to apply, applied online, i've gone to job fairs, made follow-up calls to see if i was being considered. i have excellent references, from medical doctors and psychiarist where i did internships, i even have a letter of recommendation from ncsbn (national council of state boards of nursing). i tried basically....everything i can think of. and get this...this is the shocker....my husband is a navy hospital corpsman working at balboa naval medical center . i have no clue about what else i can do or if it is even possible for new-grad lvn's to get jobs here, unless they know someone. is there any lvn that was able to get a job here in san diego with no experience, is there something that i am not doing? any and all advice would be extremely helpful!! thanks in advance!!
