Try again at Backus and keep calling and leaving messages with the nurse recruiter (his name is on website www.backushospital.org) until he calls you back. I had to leave several, my last one saying I could wait for a return call for two days and then I would contact the VP of nursing. The next program isn't until June, so I don't know how long you want to wait, but it might be worth a try. I completely understand your frustration. I went through a depression of sorts too. Try Backus Hospital in Norwich. They have a Nurse Residency Program (the only one of its kind in the region). New grads and new nurses rotate for one month each on five different floors with one on one preceptor. One day a week there is "classroom" or didactic learning. Then you are guaranteed a position after the rotations are over. Pay is good. I know they are interviewing for the next round of hires for the summer. Good luck.

Just interesting. I'm in a nearly identical situation in New England area. I'm in the RN Residency program and hoping to end up in Maternity, but again no guarantee. Out of 8 of us, 3 want maternity, so the competition is tough. I have an hour commute. It's just not what I had envisioned throughout nursing school. Let us know what you decide to do.

Just curious, this sounds like my story. What state is the RN program in?

Have you tried an adjoining state? RI, NY, MA?

Hi, I'm calling about the application I sent regarding the xyz nursing position posted on your website. I applied online and want to confirm it was received and also want to know when contacts will be made for interviews. (once she answers you, take that opportunity to briefly tell her something that differentiates you from other candidates). Okay, thank you for your time. Is contacting you again in a week okay or would 2 weeks be better? (Don't give up and don't be shy, I applied for about 10 jobs...contacted the floor manager directly at 4 different hospitals, also emailing them my resume and finally got one of the managers to contact the HR person on my behalf. That got me an interview...which led to a second and a job offer!) It takes a lot of perserverance. Be bold and don't give up.

If there is a specific hospital you are interested in, call the VP of Nursing and let them know you have left messages for HR and they have not returned your call. Or if there is a specific FLOOR you are interested in, email or call the floor manager directly. Good luck.
