  1. BarbPick, I would like to apologize for insulting you in the blanket statement I made. I would have considered our class fortunate to have a few more instructor's that were competent-That simply was not the case. This entire program is being reviewed for the fact that the board scores revealed what some of us felt the entire time-unless we personally found nurses on the floor to teach skills-good luck on ever being taught. Have you ever known a nursing program to pass students without having ever checked them off for basic skills? My reason for feeling that often times instructor's are power hungry-would be what I witnessed for the entire time I attended the university. Certain people would enter exams late and not one time did an instructor follow the rules(send them home and have them reschedule at the instructor's convience). The same was true in the clinical setting. I personally met to review every test that I took and yes when I could not understand the rational I expected to have it explained. Does that mean that I think I know it all? The majority of our instructor's were very hostile if they were expected to explain and were known to insult students to other students. Nurses as a general rule or most I have witnessed since I have been working are more than happy to explain or demonstrate if you simply ask. I feel blessed to have people I work with who are eager to help a new nurse.
  2. I read your post and it really blows my mind where they get these instructor's from-I recently graduated from a private university where we were treated as a whole extremely poor. These people who instruct us forget that we are the people who provide their paycheck- I was very vocal and know first hand that if you challenge these power junkies they can become quite hostile-They don't appreciate a person who really seeks to understand concepts -Most instructor's lack any training as teacher's-God knows I can read and don't need to pay an instructor to read a nursing text to me-But I like everyone who survives nursing school knows we pay for this abuse like it or not. Keep good notes on the abuse of power and watch your throat if you continue to speak up- if you use scantrons be sure to note on the actual test if you erase something and if it is a tricky question write out your rational beside the question- Trust me we saw first hand how these people work!
  3. No this is "The Baptist Private University"- Named after the city I live in(hint-hint)-In reference to the practicum we were grouped and sent mainly to med/surg floors-or orthopedic. Would you believe because we had such big clinical groups we never had two pt's-some were lucky and actually got a couple weeks of a unit...Of course most of the nurses wanted nothing to do with any of us-Why? Well hell they were never asked or told we were coming-Just a total waste of our time- This did allow those who utilized the time in the breakroom plenty of study time...Of course if you just studied what the instructor's told you-you might pass one of there crackpot test-but as our board passing rate shows-You would not ever pass boards! I personally attribute my passing to intense self-study and I also attended "The Hurst Review"(which the university needs to send all the instructor's to so they can learn how to teach nursing to nursing students) I also am trying to figure out why they still have the accreditation-The Dean of this university was questioned about why our class scores were so low - Would you believe the weasal actually is quoted in the newspaper saying "That the university had lowed their standards for admission the last few years-to help answer to the nursing shortage" -Please, Bishop state was having problems a few years back and that finally gave students no alternative but UM for the ADN nursing program-(HIGHLY PRICED) They accepted everyone that applied I am sure- but greed was the motivation. We did not even have desk to sit in because they had accepted so many people. They have added several new additions in the two years I have been there and prior to that they had added nothing.
  4. I recently graduated from nursing school( May 03, 2003)- We were all very aware of the very poor education we were receiving-Which is really sad considering we attended a private baptist university. Our instructors treated us as if they were blessing us with their ability to read from a nursing text-This whole nursing school experience was horrible-I constantly questioned why any of us were paying to be abused-These instructor's were anything but christian. Such condescending attitudes-if we questioned any of the tests we were considered to be trouble maker's-How dare the low little nursing student question the knowledge of these instructor's. I do feel very badly for my fellow students that did not pass boards the first time but I do hope the Alabama Board of Nursing takes a long hard look at that entire program. We graduated in the ADN program but we were never required to take pharmacology and we did not have a practicum(I cannot find another ADN program that is lacking those two items) I would be interested in hearing from any other recently graduated R.N.'s in Alabama to see if this is common practice of the ADN programs here?
