  1. It's never too late. I graduated from a BSN program along with a 52 year old woman making a career change! You have to want to do this. It's not glamourous the way it may be depicted on television. As far as being unappreciated, I find that to be not true. To me, it makes my heart warm when I have a 90-year old woman give me a hug for the care I gave her or a 52-year old male who just suffered a heart attack and is now on the other side of it thank me for keeping him calm. That for me is why I'm a nurse. I absolutely LOVE that! If you're already experiencing issues with joints and such, though, this may not be the best field. We do very heavy work, it may only make what you're having worse. At the end of the day, make sure if you go into nursing it's for the right reasons! Wish you the best of luck in life and your endeavors!
  2. The hospital I'm at is requiring ALL hospital staff to be vaccinated for the flu this year (unless you have documentation of severe reaction to this or have religious reasons as to why you can't take it). Today sitting in the break room we were talking, if you were to suffer a severe reaction or have a hematoma/numbness or tingling/severe pain at the site can we sue the hospital? Or take other actions since this is now a 'requirement'? I took mine yesterday and never usually have any issues. Just curious as to what would happen : )
  3. I've worked at the VA the past three years, husband is military so we have moved. Now working in the private sector. The largest difference is PAY and BENEFITS!! I'm getting paid way less to do way more at the facility I'm at now. But, you deal w a lot of beaurocracy at the VA. It's the govt, so EVERYTHING happens slow. Work load was pretty steady, nothing too hard. You can opt to join the union as a govt employee, which I recommend. Management was okay at the Houston VA.. staff for the most part was satisfied. If a staff member is unhappy, they're not gonna leave because of the pay/benefits. Another perk, anytime you travel you can use the govt discount.
  4. Today was an interesting day at work. I had a patient who's on a prescribed eye drop q2h, the order says for R eye. Upon going to give the 1st dose of my shift, she tells me they go in both eyes (what she does at home). She's 89 and AAO x 3. So this is what I did.. the daughter comes in while I'm giving one of the doses and says, "you just made a medication error". Stating she's only supposed to get it in the R eye despite what the patient says. I understand that, yes I did commit med errors by doing this. My question is: if reported will, what's the worse that can happen? I'm a worrier, so any help would be great. Thanks!
  5. I just had a HECTIC day at work.. but needed help c what I should do about this: have a patients who's getting Prednisolone Opthalmic drops q2h for R eye: she's 89, AAOx3.. she told me the drops go in both eyes.. so that's what I did each time they were due. At the end of my shift the daughter was at the bedside.. she let me know that I was making 'medication errors'.. I let her know the patient told me they were for both eyes. She was very rude about it though, and stated not to listen to her and to follow the orders. My questions is: can I get into trouble for this?? I documented what the patient told me. What should I do?? Co-workers told me to leave it alone and not worry about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  6. i took HESI two weeks ago and got a 1010. see if you can get your hands on a review called "Hurst Review". AWESOME!! Everything is explained thouroughly. as far as hesi: the one we took was pretty difficult. they had us calculate celcius to farenheit for goodness sake!! but there were oodles of priority questions (which is covered pretty well on Hurst). when it boils down to it pick the SAFEST answer. thats what i went by, and i guess it worked!! best of luck! our pinning is next friday and graduate next saturday!!! i'm soooo excited.
  7. we needed a 850 at our school and i scored >950. when you get in there TAKE YOUR TIME. Read the question...read the question!! And pick the SAFEST answer. don't change your answer. once you click the answer click submit and move on! you'll be fine, i was super nervous too cause we have to pass to graduate.
