The influx of new nurses can be stressful at hospitals and nursing care facilities too. I worked as a staff nurse on medsurg orienting new grad RN's and they were adamant that they did not want to work off shifts which surprised me because I finally could remember what I would do to get my foot in the door...Times have changed nurses want to have time with their families and not feel crazy switching back and forth on different shifts. Now on the other hand I have been a supervisor on 3-11 with 60% NEW GRAD LPNS these nurses need alot of support in critical reasoning skills and explanations on how to do things. And the reasons for becoming a nurse is not clear except there was a financial gain. For some not all. So now I am just a charge nurse in a real elderly setting. No gunshot wounds, ventilator pts, or generally people who are not geriatric. My daughter would have been a 4th generation nurse but she did nt want anything to do with the work I do. I was fascinated by my mother and grandmother's work. I love nursing but I have been at it too long I think. Burn out.

It seems that the only full time shifts available in hospitals are on night shift or a day/night rotation. I would take the night shift position and look for postings for day shift jobs. I have worked days most of my career and when I had to do the day/night thing the manager let me work twice as long on evenings because I couldn't get used to the hours. But I have to bite the bullet and go to nights. On the other hand LTC may be something you may like and be satisfied with if you can see your family/friends. The bottom line here is you usually have to work your way up to the day shift. And who is this manager that says you will want to leave after 2 years? She may be underestimating your commitment to your chosen field. Good luck to you. If you want to continue your career nights is the way to go. Post a note what you decide.
