Yes, EJCL is right. I mixed up two independent conversations. As long as your gpa is over a 3.0, you have a shot. Grades are looked at but they also look at other things such as university credits, previous healthcare experience, goal statement, interview process, and previous degree. Sorry for the mix up.

My undergrad gpa was a 3.4. Prereqs were a 3.5. I had zero experience. I talked to the former director of the program and she told me that as long as you have over a 3.0, they don't even look at your gpa. I had a 2.5 in anatomy/physio. I don't think you're in too bad of shape. I had some other science classes that may have helped me though. From my first degree, I took orgo 1 and 2 as well as gen chem 1 and 2. They may do this automatically now, they may reconfigure your gpa if you have additional classes. For example, I had a 3.0 in organic chemistry 1 and a 3.5 in organic chemistry 2. Initially, they only used my first organic grade. After talking to ------------, they took the average. Hope this helps appease your anxiety. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Before I started the ABSN program at OU, the Oak Park branch came to OU and had a meeting. They specifically said to go through them as they don't make you jump through all of the loops as other branches. I have spent less than 2 hours total with their representatives and have received all 10k. Some of the other students that have gone through a different branch, whether coincidence or not, have only received 5K. Good luck to everyone

I'd highly recommend going through the Oak Park office. Within the last two weeks, I just picked up one of my vouchers for school, as did many of my classmates. I received 10k broken into 3 installments, one for each semester: Spring, Fall and Summer.

Hi guys, I'm currently in the program, will graduate August 10. I just skimmed through the earlier posts, so I'll try to cover what I can recall. I had to wait about 9 months after I had found out I was accepted to the program to actually start. My GPA wasn't great, 3.4 prereqs and overall from MSU with a psych degree. I had no experience but I'm male. I don't exactly recall but I don't think I had to wait that long to hear a response, less than two months for sure. When I interviewed, they accepted 50 students out of approximately 150-200. I've heard some horror stories about other's interviews but mine went well, I guess it really depends on who you get. For the online prereq classes, to be honest, it is kind of a waste of time. Talking to the professors, they completely acknowledge the fact that all you do is sit in front of your computer with the book taking the exams. They expect that from us. One professor even told me that don't understand why we aren't all taking the online exams together. For the program itself, it can get pretty hectic. It is on the disorganized side but I feel like that comes with the territory. I'm not sure it will still be offered but I was in the "pilot" group over the Summer. It allowed us to take fundamentals (281) prior to actually starting the program. I thought it was really nice as I had zero experience and it allowed me to get used to everything. In addition to that fact, merely being able to break up validations is a huge burden taken off your shoulders. You will hate validations. Easily the worst part about the program. Personally, I'd really recommend it if offered. What else? I am part of the Beaumont cohort. We were offered nursing assistant jobs through them once we were accepted. Personally, I did not take the job but most of the people did. I've heard it is pretty helpful but people tend to hate the work that goes into it. If you have any questions, let me know. My interview essay ended up being pretty similar to my personal statement. The question they gave me asked me to define critical thinking and explain how I used it to decide I wanted to pursue a career in nursing.

I had a 3.5 with one retake. I was told by Dr. Penprase that as long as you have over a 3.0, you have a fair shot as they don't sort by GPA. They look into a variety of different things: GPA, interview, personal statement, experience, etc. And just a heads up, I haven't seen anyone talk about this but the first thing they have you do is write a 10 minute essay. It caught me pretty off guard so I just wanted to have you be a little more prepared than I was. Hope this helps

There are a few reasons I chose OU's accelerated BSN program. The first being that they accept during all three semesters and their program is only 12 months long. That is a pretty big upside when, for example, Wayne State only accepts in January and their program is 16 months long. Secondly, OU's prereqs were exactly the classes I already had. I graduated from Michigan State and they did not require labs with their anatomy and physiology classes. I would have had to retake both of those along with micro (no lab) to even have a chance to get into Wayne, OCC, etc. And lastly, I thought that it would be more time efficient to wait a year (08-09) and complete the program in a year (09-10) than to go to say MCC, complete their program in 1.5-2 years and have to go back and complete a bachelors (minimum of 2 years). I also didn't like the way that OCC, MCC and Wayne sorted applicants. At Wayne, if I remember correctly, they sorted you into 6 groups. In the end, since I didn't go to Wayne and took 0 classes there, I was in group 6. I just kind of thought with all of this, OU made a lot of sense. The year long gap is because OU has wait lists applicants. The three online classes do not take a year, in fact, you can finish them all in one semester.

Christinajoy, I am not yet allowed to respond to PMs. I didn't want you to think I was ignoring you so I thought I'd respond here. I started my personal statement explaining why and how I made my decision to go into nursing. In that section, I gave some personal story of a family member and talked about my experience as an undergrad as topics. Next section was about my volunteering and shadowing. I didn't have a lot of experience in that specific area but I just kind of tried to highlight my strong points and why I thought I'd make a good candidate. I continued to talk about what I was doing now; where I lived, talked about working full time, and how my degree (BS in psychology) would contribute to the nursing field. I finished explaining and showing them why I thought I would succeed. And obviously, don't forget to thank them in the end. I hope this helps.

Hey guys, I just randomly found this forum. I, too, have been accepted into the September 09 second degree program. I'm currently just taking nutrition and patho, shouldn't be too bad. And in response to why some people had interviews and others did not. My friend that is in the program now said that a lot of people were failing out. When she got accepted, OU didn't necessarily interview everyone. Now, they want to interview people to make sure they are there for the right reasons and to see if they are willing to make the right sacrifices. Hope this helps
