To take a rehab/SNF RN job or wait it out for acute care in Sacramento... UGH! What to do
I didn't take the job because I didn't feel good about it. I spoke with the manager on the unit where I did my preceptorship and was told I have a good chance of getting in on her unit. Like I said, I think at six months post graduation, I will begin to worry. Thanks for all the encouragement and support.

That's wonderful iPink! I wish that were the case here. First off, hospitals within states very. The new grad residencies within Sacramento require 0 work experience as of now. UC Davis, and Sutter STRONG Sacramento are the ones I am kind of hoping for. My cousin who is a nursing instructor here said the only experience that would not count under my license would by wellness clinics so I have been looking into that. Hopefully this will change in the near future!

To take a rehab/SNF RN job or wait it out for acute care in Sacramento... UGH! What to do
I am not being a snob. I own a housecleaning business and work very hard in the home of older adults. My grandmother worked as a CNA in nursing homes for over twenty years and I grew up visiting the residents. I am just struggling to make a decision because I get a lot of conflicting information and advice from everyone from nursing instructors and nurses to family and friends. I am certain that if I started in a nursing home I could still have a wonderful career, I was just hoping for the nurturing and training that might come from a new grad program because I am lacking confidence. I am just a little afraid to take on a nursing home job where I have 24-60 patients. I thought I would ask within this forum because I was hoping to gain wisdom.

I graduated in January 2015, so I think I will continue to try for acute care positions and new grad residencies until I hit my six month mark. I have had one residency interview already and was recommended for another one by my nursing recruiter. I tried to getting into a prison job which sounded awesome to me since I have a love for psych. and public health but was told I needed acute care experience first.

Thank you all for responding. I can definitely see the benefit of working while looking into acute care, however as a new grad I am applying for new grad residencies for which I would be disqualified if I have work experience under my license, thus the dilemma. Also I have been told that it is better to begin my career in the acute care setting as opposed to somewhere else if acute care is necessary to reach my goals. Most acute care job postings in my area request at least one year of acute care experience required, home health/hospice included. Any more thoughts?

To take a rehab/SNF RN job or wait it out for acute care in Sacramento... UGH! What to do
I am a new grad RN with both my ADN and now my BSN. I am in the Sacramento area and am not finding any new grad positions with the exception of new grad programs which are highly competitive. I have been turned down for over 30 new grad residency positions and over 80 "experience preferred" positions in everything from home health/hospice to med-surg. I have been offered a post-acute rehab facility positions and a psychiatric facility position but can't seem to decide whether to stick it out longer and try for the acute care setting or not. I am certain I am not the only one that has been in this position. Any advice out there would be really appreciated.

Psychiatric nursing... do you really lose all your nursing skills?
I am a 40 year old new graduate RN with an ADN and now BSN. I was just offered a mental health position within a hospital that provides inpatient and outpatient services. I would start in outpatient first. The position allows for a lot of classroom teaching, leading groups on nutrition, medications, coping skills and overall wellness, all of which sounds amazing to me! It would be my first nursing job and as much as my heart is in it and excited about it, I still have all of these fears of being limited if I end up wanting a change later. I have read all of your posts but still feel so unsure about what to do! I absolutely loved psych in school and thought at the time it was definitely for me. When I think about the possibilities of this mental health job, I feel exhilarated! In these moments, I think, " I should go for it!" Then that little voice of doubt and fear leaks in and I find myself thinking I better reserve myself for a new grad residency instead. What do you guys think? I was offered the job on Thursday and told her I needed to think about it and call my recruiter first. My recruiter hasn't called back yet but has referred my resume to the hiring manager on a med-surg unit for a new grad program position. I have a feeling I might get an interview. I want it all! I want to be happy while helping patients, first and foremost! UGH!

Pediatric Psychiatric Nursing
I too started my Psych rotation yesterday in what's called the latency unit. The kids are ranging from 4-11 yrs old. I loved it so much! I wanted to take all of them home with me by the end of my shift today. I want to work there so bad! I had so much fun in peds but this is totally different. I loved being directly involved with every part of their care. There is so much more of an opportunity to be therapeutic. The staff was wonderful, they set clear boundaries and are consistent, loving and encouraging. I would love to be a part of a team like that. What a wonderful way to spend our days!
