Anyone visiting Ft. Sam Houston, Texas in May for BAMC tour and physical?
Hey well that sucks, but at least you should still get to go. No, we did not pick our flight time. It was all set up by the recruiter so we really did not have any say. Yes we did stay by ourselves in the hotel. Actually my fiance and I were given separate rooms, but still stayed together. So everyone has their own room and the military people there just tell you what time to meet them in the mornings. Currently I am waiting for my waivers to get approved. My recruiter said we should know in the next 2-3 weeks. Otherwise I am finishing up the last of my paper work so my packet should be done in the next month pending the waivers of course.

On the trip I was on maybe 10-12 were with us. About 4 or 5 were nurses or student nurses the rest were other medical professionals. I'm hoping to get my packet in this October or November. I graduate school May 2010.

Hey I got your PM but I don't think I have made enough posts for my PM function to work yet. Anyway on the trip Sunday was basically a travel day. We did not get into San Antonio until about 11PM. Woke up Monday morning and did the physical as has been previously described. After the physical we toured the hospital and the rehab facility. Both were extremely impressive. Be prepared to know some specialty areas you would like to see such as ER, oncology ect. They asked us what we were interested in and tried thier best to get us in those areas. However the burn unit is pretty much off limits to tours. Then they set up some meetings for us with nurses in the hospital to talk with and ask questions. So, make sure you have some questions in mind to ask them because they are more the happy to answer. It is nice to get info from actual nurses that are there and working versus just hearing everything from the recruiter. After we did all of this we went down on the river walk and had dinner that evening. Then that was pretty much it for the day. Be prepared for a lot of walking. Tuesday was a little more hectic as everyone had different flight times out so the day was broke up a little more. The main thing of this day is we drove around and took a tour of the base and also saw the army medical museum. We also did vision and hearing tests at the on base MEPS. After that you basically hang out untill your leaving flight. If you have time to go anywhere or see anything they are usually more the happy to accomodate so long as it works out with everyone elses scheduals. Like I said earlier it was a blast and I really enjoyed it. My recruiter and I are now starting the job of getting all my stuff together to submit my packet. Had I not taken the tour I probably would have never choose the Army. It was my major deciding factor.

Hey I'm not going on the tour but went on it last summer. I to am graduating next May and it was the biggest deciding factor for me. It was a very fun and interesting tour. If you eat cheap you'll actually come out money ahead because they pay you a flat rate for everything regardless of how much you spend. It was an awesome trip and will give you a first hand look at a working Army Medical Center.

Usphs Srcostep
Hello all I have been closely following most of the USPHS service threads and if I ask anything that has already been answered please forgive me. I am a junior and I am working on my packet to get it finished up and mailed in in the next few weeks. I have not been able to get in touch with any recruiters through phone calls or e-mails so some of my questions may be very simple. So, my first question is, is there any additional documents that I need to send in that is not listed on the USPHS website as requirements for the SRCOSTEP packet. What are the odds of being accepted pending you have 4 good references and good grades (3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale)? If accepted how likely is it to get an offer from an specific agency that you listed in your packet as a prefered agency? If you put a preference on the location how likely are you to get that as well? I am very interested in mental health what if anything should I put on my application packet to help get me into a career for mental health? I am very leary of indian health because I have heard that a lot of indian reservations can be dangeous places for cacasion's has any USPHS memebers found this to be true? What health conditions are considered automatic disqualification and is it the same a regular military service health qualifications? Okay thats all I can think of at this time and if anyone knows any of these answers that would be great. Thank you all in advance.

Dual-Military Army Nurses
Thank you very much. That's what I was hoping. We both still are really keeping our options open as far as what we want to do civilian or military though I personally am leaning more towards military, but i cannot speak for her. On and unrelated note. What kind of patient loads are nurse's in the Army and all of the military experiencing? I've heard that most nurses are working 3-4 12hr shifts a week is this about right? What about when on deployment? I know many of these questions may have been answered elsewhere but I haven't stumbled across them yet. Thanks

Dual-Military Army Nurses
I am just curious about the experinces of any Nurse-Nurse marriages? My fiance and I who are both Juniors in our nursing program are thinking about both joining the Army. We plain to marry before we graduate school so, in essence we will be married before we start any military duty. Our biggest fear is being split up. We both realize that it is a possibility, but we don't want to have to be away from each other for very extended periods of time if it is avoidable. So what have some of your all experinces been?
