  1. I am an NP. I applied for the 2013 cycle. My facility score was 18 (so Tier 1) and my debt to income ratio was 84%. I was awarded the loan repayment. My strategy is to pay minimum payment on all the loans each month, and put the leftover amount into paying off the highest interest loan. I received an email that I was one of the finalists for the award in early May, and I found out that I was a recipient of the award at the end of August.
  2. Thanks Momomonny! I signed up for the CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider through the Red Cross and it stated that it was a 2 year certification unless you are a lifeguard than it was only for 1 year. Yale said that either Red Cross or American Hear Association will work. Thank you for the link to the health insurance rates. So with the prescription coverage, the total cost (I think the rates went up a little this year) will be about $2300. For two people, if I wanted to add my husband, around $5700. I will have to check my husband's insurance through his work to see which costs less and compare overall coverages. The Yale Health Plan looks like a great coverage though...
  3. WannabePNP, I applied to two lenders (Wells Fargo and Citigroup) for a private loan, and got pre-approved on both. I haven't signed any promissory notes yet, because I am going through the fine print on the terms pages to make sure I pick the best lender. I spoke to both lenders and once you get pre-approved, you have 6-9 months to sign the documents, otherwise the loan is not completed and you can cancel your application at any time. I spoke to a person at Yale financial aid office and she said that generally May or June is when she would recommend applying. As long as the funds get disbursed to Yale by August 1st, they don't care when you apply. I hope this helps.
  4. Does anyone know how much the Prescription Plus coverage for the health insurance costs? I can't find any info anywhere... I signed up today for the CPR course for the professionals at our neighborhood Red Cross headquarters. I made a list of things to do and slowly going through it to get them accomplished gradually. My savings account is shrinking very fast...
  5. Hi Biddy, I received a $7800 scholarship but everything else is $0. I don't qualify for Federal Loans until the Spring semester, and I will have to take out a private loan for the Fall semester. I sure hope that the $65000 first year budget includes Summer semester. From YSN website: tuition per semester is $14,512 (so total is about $29,000) and then $11,375 for the summer term, so it all adds up to about $40,400 for 11 months. So I think the tuition listed on our financial aid award letter of $42,095 includes the summer term and all the other fees, like lab fee, etc. As someone said in one of the earlier posts: getting accepted seems like an easy part right now, paying for nursing school is what is keeping me up at night these days. I guess it will all come down to finding jobs with or applying to loan repayment programs after we graduate.
  6. Calalilly, If you are in the Oncology program, every student is encouraged to apply for the American Cancer Society scholarship. We will be eligible in our second year and the award is $10,000 per year for 2 years, which I think will help a lot. Here is the link: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/RES/content/RES_5_2x_Masters_Degree_Scholarships_in_Cancer_Nursing.asp The financial aid person said that almost every oncology student who applies, gets that award. I hope this info helps!
  7. Calalilly, I don't want to sound harsh, but it is called Oncology NP track for a reason. As you know, cancer is a very complicated disease(s) so being trained as a nurse practitioner specializing in cancer, wouldn't you want to be focused on learning as much about it as possible ? If you are worried about sticking with it already, than you might have picked the wrong concentration. Unfortunately, it does not seem that Yale will freely allow switching specialties. Have you applied and been accepted to other schools with less stringent rules? Some schools will allow you to pick or switch specialties later on. I guess for the Oncology NP at Yale you have to really know that this is what you want to do, or you might end up unhappy. Is oncology really what you want to be specializing in? If I may ask, what were the reasons that you picked this particular specialy? My advice is for you to think really long and hard about it before you decide which program to go to. On the other hand, maybe it is hard, but not impossible to swich specialties at Yale.
  8. I specifically remember this being discussed at Yale info session that after we pass our NCLEX exam, it is strongly encouraged that we get some RN work experience. And I was told that most students work part-time as RNs while continuing on with their specialty. So I don't think you are crazy (or maybe we both are?)
  9. I am definitely going to Yale (since it was the only school I applied to) and I live in CT. However since I live about 1 hour away from New Haven, I will be relocating closer to New Haven in October when my lease is up. I am not up for a 2 hour daily commute. I will probably look to move to one of the neighboring towns like Wallingford, Cheshire, North Branford, West Haven, etc. I have a car here in CT so I will be more than happy to share the 3 extra seats with any of you if we have our clinicals at the same or nearby sites.
  10. Congratulations everyone!!!! It looks like we might have at least a quarter or a third of incoming class on this forum! I am very happy for all of you and can't wait to meet you in the Fall! CaliforniaGirl2, I believe we met at the Interview day at Yale. You were in my small group session and I remember you talking about your twin sister who wanted to stay in California :) I was one of the two Oncology applicants in the group. I hope to see you at Yale!
  11. Considering that there is no mail delivery today, I would give them a call to ask about your status. Last year many people called and found out over the phone.
  12. Congratulations to all of you who got in so far!:yeah:Those of you who are waiting, hang in there! I am so excited for all of us and can't wait to meet you.
  13. Congratulations mme1283! And welcome to the thread!
  14. Thanks everyone! Suga70, my specialty is Oncology NP. Lauralou2008, the letter says that the financial aid information packet will be mailed to us by the end of this month, but there is no exact date. So within next couple of weeks. I am crossing my fingers for all of you! It's almost like we already bonded on this forum and it would be great to be in one class together...
  15. I was accepted!!!!:bowingpur I got my letter today! I live in CT so mail gets here fast. I am sure most of you will hear any day. I am sooo happy and I hope that you are my classmates! The acceptance letter is thin so don't assume anything when you see it. And we have until March 15th to put the deposit down.
  16. My mailman doesn't deliver my mail until 3-4 PM. I am not sure how I am going to get through the day. Every time my phone rings, my heart rate shoots up.
  17. I am going out of my mind too! Made so many mistakes at work today... So basically nothing got accomplished either.
  18. I also applied to Yale only. Putting all my eggs in one basket is very stressful, but due to my schedule there was no way I could fulfill the prerequisites required by other schools. So this waiting is making it even more excruciatingly painful because I have no other school acceptances to fall back on. Even though I took some of the classes, like Genetics for example, many schools that I was interested in, wanted that and other science classes to be taken within last 5 years. And since I have taken many of them 6-10 years ago, I was not about to take them again. And as to Anatomy and Physiology courses, required by almost all schools I looked into, they require a lot of time commitment that I could not afford this year.
  19. I suspect the same thing. My stomach is in the knot and if we have to wait till next week I might develop some ulcers.... It is very difficult knowing that they met on the 9th, decided our faith, and now we are suspended in a limbo. I wish we just got emailed, followed up with an official letter and not the other way around. My New Year's resolution was to exercise my patience, but it is not working very well at the moment...
  20. I am not thrilled about the snail mail notifications. It is hard enough to keep checking your email mailbox, never mind sitting at work/school and thinking about whether back home there is a letter waiting... . I missed the closing remarks by Angela during my interview day. Did she say whether she would be calling/emailing in addition to the official snail mail letter? This waiting is exhausting...
  21. WannabePNP, it is not just you. I have been replaying my interview and even having bad dreams about it. In my recent dream, my interviewer gives my application away for a review to another faculty member who decides that I am only minimally qualified to be an NP. Quite a nightmare. As to the interview, when I get nervous, I can't speak as coherently and eloquently as I would like to. And that is exactly what happened during my interview. I prepared prior to the interview but the words just wouldn't come out as planned. Well, it is out of my hands now. I am trying to keep busy and exercise more to keep my mind off of thinking about it. Unfortuantely it ain't working... Just like yalienne, I also believe that it is the whole package. We had to submit a lot of materials with our application. I am sure they will review them carefully one more time before deciding. Good luck. I am sure this thread will get revived as soon as February 13th rolls in...
  22. I also had a great experience at Yale. The sessions were very informative and all my questions got answered. My interview went well, I think, and the program appears to be very organized. I did not get to meet any current students because it was clinicals day, so not many people were around. Those of you who got to meet them, what did you learn from them? I really liked the first session where we had a sample of teaching style of one of the professors. Overall I was very impressed and I am impatiently waiting for the admission decision... Good luck to all of you!
  23. Good luck on your interviews everyone! Please, report back about your experiences and impressions . Good news is that it will be sunny and relatively warm here in CT all week (no negative digits temperatures) and no snow!
  24. I am applying to Oncology Nurse Practitioner specialty. I am not quite sure how to prepare for the interview other than thinking of the standard questions: Why the NP program, not MD or PA? Why your specialty? Where you want to be in 5 years, etc. I guess it is hard to know as there are many interviewers and they have different styles. So I will try to look professional, sound confident and speak from the heart. And hope for the best...
