  1. I'm using "Ethical Issues in Modern Medicine~Contemporary Readings in Bioethics" by Steinbock/Arras/London for my Biomedical Ethics course that I'm taking. It would be very useful for this assignment. See if you can find it at the library. :)
  2. Hi everyone. I am 1 year away from starting my 20 month clinical training to complete my BSN (there is a waiting period). I plan to go into either the Public Health Service or the Air Force. I lean more toward the latter but am thinking that the SRCOSTEP program would be extremely helpful in order to have a livable wage happening while I attend school. Does the Air Force have a program which supplies wages in addition to the tuition costs in exchange for time served after graduation? How soon can I apply? I would rather be in the Air Force than the PHS but I have yet to find this vital piece of info. Frankly, the possibility of a paycheck during school is going to make a big difference for us in re: to which path if it is at all possible. I am in Alaska. The closest health professions recruiter is in Washington. Any thoughts on whether I should speak with the ROTC here at the University or call Washington? Also, I have four children and a husband who works full time. Are there dependent limits for nursing students/grads with the Air Force? I know they are rather stringent for most branches. Thank you so much. Warmly, Mindy
  3. Thank you so much for this information. I have been wondering about these very things. Sounds like I will at least have some say in where I go. I don't mind moving but I also would like to have a chance to express my preferences. Thank you again.
  4. Thank you for your feedback to this message. Do you have any information about what I can expect here in AK if I join the SRCOSTEP program? Will I be obligated to relocate out of the state of Alaska for my 2 years of service after I graduate? I don't mind being moved out into the boonies of Alaska, but I'd prefer to stay in-state if at all possible. Thank you again for any information you have to give.
  5. What is the day to day like above and beyond 40 hours a week? I'm curious what to expect as a newly enlisted BSN grad and am specifically curious about the Air Force. Also, I'm curious about student opportunities. Is ROTC the only option for nursing students or is there another route? What kind of financial assistance is generally available for students, particularly above and beyond tuition assistance? I will be scrambling to support us while finishing school. Any information is appreciated.
  6. Hi there. Thank you for posting, 3dog1cat, about your experiences. I am currently in line for the next 15-18 months to start the 20 month clinical training to get my BSN. I am quite interested in the USPHS but have yet to be able to speak to a recruiter. My questions are specifically: What are the differences between the JRCOSTEP and the SRCOSTEP programs? Since I haven't reached my clinical training yet (but am completing all prereqs this semester) when is the soonest I can apply? Should I just call the people listed on the job site about the positions available in Alaska? There is no description, just a name and phone number. I am only a student now, but I'd like to know what's available, especially here, because I'd like to stay here if possible and know what I can expect by way of availability. With grad school being a benchmark for promotion, how does that process unfold? Is that on your off time? Is that subsidized by the Corp at all or are you on your own with that? One of the draws of the Air Force is the educational support. What were your deployments like? Thank you for getting back to me when you get a chance. Also, I have a big family, 5 kids and husband, and am interested in the day to day life, hours worked weekly, etc. Thanks again.
  7. Hi there. I am wondering if anyone has personal experience as a member of the US Public Health Service and being commissioned in Alaska. We currently live in Eagle River. I am working on my BSN through UAA and am interested in joining either the Public Health Service or the Air Force. Staying in AK would be fantastic but there is not a lot of information out there. I know there is info at the military nursing forum but not AK-specific. Anyone have any helpful info? Thanks so much.
