Babysitting patient??
it's a M-F 8-4 school ....and I would be babysitting for free...I feel the child needs extra attention and since I do not have kids or anything tying me up on weekends...I would like to rise to the challenge of keeping her some weekends... so they're trying to talk me out of it incase the mom decides she doesn't like me and doesn't want me around her child at work....OR if the child says she got a bruise or injury from ME ...but the thing is, where I work...if a child says you hurt them, you get charged with it anyway....so off hours or not, I would be screwed if a child were to say I hurt them....but I have PLENTY of references before I became a nurse...that would definitely back me up that I would never hurt a child... see when I came into this job, I thought I would be able to help with the children, help them learn, etc....before I became a nurse, I was tied between nursing and teaching...so I thought this job would be perfect...I could teach, but also do nursing.....well my boss HATES the idea, and doesn't allow me to do ANYTHING but nursing...

Babysitting patient??
I agree racing_mom .... I called my stateboard and they said there's no where in the rules that I cannot babysit a child outside of work that is a patient of mine... as well as...I talked to my supervisor's supervisor and she tried to talk me out of it...but said they could not stop me
-
Babysitting patient??
okay...thanks I have a question though...if the parents decided to move the child into a different daycare...would I still not be able to babysit or anything?
-
Babysitting patient??
conflict of interest? maybe?
-
Babysitting patient??
I think what my boss has a problem with is the fact that the child I would be babysitting is a "patient" of ours....it's a daycare, basically....and I know I'm a nurse 24/7...I was a nurse before I became a nurse...a nurse is there to care and help people through crisis....this family is struggling and needs my help...and I can't help them because I'm a nurse? what?! to me the argument is ridiculous....I should be able to babysit for a family that needs me...whether she goes where I work or not....
-
Babysitting patient??
Is it totally against rules of nursing to offer to babysit a patient? Mind you, "patient" means student in my case....because I'm a school nurse.

Blood Glucose Monitoring w/o Dr.'s orders
so here's another question.... since my direct supervisor, who's an RN, is the only head medical person at the school I work for.. (it's a state school, btw) everyone believes her opinion on any situation is the right one since she is the RN and I am the LPN...who should I go to or where do I go to get protocols?

Blood Glucose Monitoring w/o Dr.'s orders

Blood Glucose Monitoring w/o Dr.'s orders
His blood sugar has dropped ONCE to 33. His blood sugar is usually okay, the lowest it has been since then is 55 which is still very low but I think I should only check it without dr's orders when he is symptomatic.. let me clarify somethings again: -he isn't diabetic -he isn't receiving any type of insulin -he isn't PO fed -he takes polycose -it dropped to 33 AFTER I fed him and my supervisor said it was because I fed him 15 minutes early -my supervisor wants me to check his BS with every feeding (bid) symptomatic or not -we have no doctor's orders or protocols regarding this my conclusion is this: nursing judgment will cover me as long as he is symptomatic, otherwise I need a doctor's order to check it regularly.

Blood Glucose Monitoring w/o Dr.'s orders
"Unless this child is receiving insulin, there would be no way his sugar would DROP AFTER a feeding; or, I guess, unless he's a VERY active child. Remember exercise and insulin are the only two things have the ability to lower glucose." evidently not...he does not take insulin...absolutely no insulin, and he has CP...so he can only be as active as his wheelchair allows. I'm with this child from 8-4, unless he's got a dose of insulin in his backpack that he magically administers to himself...he isn't on insulin.

Blood Glucose Monitoring w/o Dr.'s orders
lol I think everyone is confused...even I'm confused and I'm the one in the situation....my theory is..if it's this confusing, something isn't right about the situation haha...

Blood Glucose Monitoring w/o Dr.'s orders
that's EXACTLY how I feel about it all...THANK YOU!!!!! I needed to hear that...reassurance that I'm not insane for wanting doctor's orders is nice... and to answer another person's questions...I do live in south US 70-120 is "normal" according to my books and the hospital 70-170 is "normal" for a diagnosed diabetic child I really don't understand what's going on...my supervisor's excuse for it shooting so low was because I fed him 15 minutes early. But from what I understand...feeding him will raise his BS.... I feel extremely frustrated...I hear the words "nursing judgement" but when the child is acting completely normal..."nursing judgement" won't cover me for checking it when there's nothing wrong....where I live...you don't get to talk to doctors directly...all you do is talk to the nurse at the office who then relays the message to the doctor and back to you...I'd love to be able to contact his doctor and talk to him...there's a fishy reason why we don't have an order the whole situation is .....odd. and something isn't right about it.
