Newly qualified... are my feelings normal?!
I feel the same way a lot of the time. I qualified here in the U.S. in August of 2012. I got my first job at a teaching hospital in a rural setting in November of 2012. I did get the preceptorship for 3 months, and now 8 months later, I still feel worried and nervous sometimes. The interns at our hospital are very receptive and encouraging to speak with, but I do feel that I am not doing well because sometimes they will speak to me as if I am completely wrong. I've had moments where I wanted to quit, but patient's have continuously told me that I am a caring and great nurse and will go far in the field. I guess this is all just jitters and worries we all face, especially in our first year of work!

RN from the USA seeking to move and work in the UK
The pay cut would definitely be problematic, although I am making $40,000/year which is significantly less than what I should be making in New York. Money isn't much of an issue for us, my husband and I do want to be able to live well but at the price of staying in the U.S...not really. Something has always draw me to the UK as well as my husband, and we figure before we have any children or settle in any one area, this would be a spectacular experience. I'm sorry for saying everyone is trying to discourage us...I have not been in a great mindset lately and my worries are getting the better of me. I have a few friends in the UK, maybe I will enlist their help as well as to what I have to do. And I will definitely get my Hungarian citizenship - that one will be far easier since my mother and father are alive and nationals, as well as my grandmother who still lives there. Any more information would be greatly appreciated!

RN from the USA seeking to move and work in the UK
Oh yes, I am well aware of those things as well XB9S. There is a agency that will help me with all of that. How about Poole? Brighton? Cambridge? Gloucestershire? Weston-super-Mare? Unfortunately my husband is not an EU national and really has no ties to Europe except from a great distance, since his great great grandparents were from England. This will be the difficult part, but nothing is impossible! Sometimes I feel as though people are trying to discourage me from going...I'm not sure if this is true, but it seems like it.

I was thinking of going over as a travel nurse at first and then doing my visa and such while there. Maybe I will try to gain Hungarian citizenship so that it won't be a bigger issue than it needs to be. The only problem then will be my husband.

No I do not have Hungarian citizenship, although I would definitely be able to get it if necessary. I know London and Edinburgh are expensive, but what about Bristol or Oxford? I will have a year of full time work under my belt in November.

RN from the USA seeking to move and work in the UK
Hello! I am a nurse working in upstate NY, although I am originally from the greater metropolitan area of NY. I moved upstate when I was employed on a Surgical unit in a hospital. Now, after only 8 months of working here, I am worn out. I love my coworkers (for the most part) and I like the setting we live in, but it has gotten to be too much for me. Everything is too far (especially since I do not drive). So, my husband and I have been discussing where we would like to move, and we have come to the conclusion that we no longer want to reside in the U.S. I recently came upon an agency called Continental Travelnurse which helps RN's go to various places in the UK. I'm not sure if that is the route that I will take, but I do know for sure that we want to move. So the reason I am posting is to find out about nursing in the UK. Average salaries? Patient to nurse ratio? I am well aware that nurses are not seen in the same light in the UK as they are here in America - I've heard this many times and even encountered it when I was in my parent's homeland, Hungary. What would be the best route to take? I know living prices are high in London, but how are they in Edinburgh, Bristol, Oxford? How is The Royal Infirmary Edinburgh? Any and all information is GREATLY appreciated! Thank you so much!

Interview help!!
My best advice is breathe and be confident! That is definitely something that sets you above others. The questions were not difficult at all, I mean, they are very very friendly and they make you feel comfortable. It's just a more formal conversation honestly. They asked me about my preceptorship mostly. What my favorite clinical was. My strengths and weaknesses. 5 year plan. Whether you would do a 2 year commitment. Tell them about a time in nursing that you had a conflict with a patient or a coworker. Tell them about a time that was most memorable to you so far. Then I was interviewed by 2 of the nursing staff because they want someone who will fit in with the floor nurses and can get along with them well. I'm sure you will be great! Cooperstown is beautiful and honestly, even though it is a VERY small town, the hospital is amazing. They have great benefits, good pay for upstate, and they pride themselves on their nurses. The nurses are encouraged to increase their education and develop and be better. I would tell you that if they offer you a job, you should definitely and without a doubt accept. It's different, but the experience you get will probably be worth every ounce of time you spend up there. And who knows? You might love it!

Hey so I just got a call from (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME - PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES OF INDIVIDUALS PER TOS), and she told me that surgical is very interested in me and she is now going to start the next process which is calling my references and doing a background check and that she would call me early next week. This is amazing! I'm so excited!

Oh wow...hm, I hope it doesn't take that long! SO nerve wrecking!! Lol...but the surgical floor nurse manager told me to expect a call next week and the nurse recruiter told me that if I didn't hear from her in a couple of days, to call her. What should I take as a couple of days?

Interview help!!
Hey! So I have an interview this Thursday at Bassett Medical Center up in Cooperstown, NY...and I REALLY pray I get this job! My questions are...what is the best thing to wear for my interview? I have a beautiful pencil skirt and jacket suit which I think will be fine...I hope so, anyway! How long will it take to find out whether or not I am hired? Could it be right after the interview or a couple of days after? And since I have to relocate what should I say if they ask me when I will be available to start? Thank you!!

HELP!! Phone Interview with Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY!!
Hey everyone! I had posted on the boards a week or so ago about my upcoming interview at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY. Well, I must have really made a good impression because I got an in-person interview on the spot and it is scheduled for October 11th! I am so excited, but SO nervous! I don't even know what to expect! Apparently I am having two interviews on the same day. One for the medical floor and one for the surgical floor. Each of them lasting one hour. Now...ONE HOUR interviews? What could they possibly ask, do, etc.? I was just wondering if anyone who has been hired there could tell me what to expect, what to bring, how to dress? Any good advice? I would GREATLY appreciate it! Thank you so much!

HELP!! Phone Interview with Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY!!
HI! Sorry for it taking me so long, I had a lot of things to do today! Haha. So, yes! At the end of our phone conversation, she invited me up to Cooperstown for two separate interviews--one for the medical floor and one for the surgical floor! Those appointments are scheduled for October 11th at 9AM. The interview questions she gave me were different from what she asked you. She asked me: Why do you want to relocate to Cooperstown? Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a patient. Tell me about a difficult patient and how you handled him/her. What are your long and short term goals? You do realize how different the life is up here than downstate? When would you be able to relocate? How did you like your clinicals? If offered a position, in which field would you like to start? She was very nice and I was surprised that she asked me for a second interview right then and there!
