  1. What type of guidelines does your agencies use for the on call home health nurse? I am trying to get evidence-based guidelines for our agency (where we currently have none and each nurse is just using their better judgement for triaging). I am open for any and all suggestions. Thanks
  2. What types of on call guidelines do you use at your agency? We don't have any the moment and are looking into it (like a triage type book). I have been in home health for 8 months now and love it, but am still very nervous when it comes to taking call and I would love to have something backing my advice up (as well as other RN's) I think it is important to give consistent advice. Any thoughts...
  3. The patients I am referring to are all on stool softeners, I always suggest prunes/juice, coffee, ect, and I am just looking for more tips - exactly like what you all have provided, Thanks!!!
  4. Does anyone have any good ideas for post-op constipation (with narcotic use)? I see this so much and want to give my patients the best advice I can.
  5. The one on one is what I went into nursing for!!!
  6. That is what I am so excited about. I know there will be harder days than some but those benefits for me all seem to definitly out weigh hospital nursing. Thanks so much!
  7. Hi all, I have been a little discouraged reading some of these threads. :uhoh21: I am new to home health and would like to hear if there are any positive comments about it. I am very excited about the transition myself and have really liked what I've seen.
  8. I work on a busy ortho floor and start off with 6 patients, usually discharge a couple and get 1-2 post-op's in a 12 hour shift; along with giving at least one person blood, dealing with post-op issues (pain, nausea, etc.), and trying to give quality customer service. I rarely get lunch much less any breaks and I am usually at work until 8:00-8:30 charting. Any other ortho floors like this or do I need to seriously consider something else? I really enjoy the ortho environment and taking care of post-op patients, but at this rate I can feel the burnout coming on. I have been on this floor for 5 years and this is all I've done since I graduated from nursing school.

We will be implementing the Cerner computerized system into our hospital shortly. Almost everything will be done on the computer including charting, MARS, etc. Any opinions or comments from others who use this system at their hospital?
  10. I'm a graduate of St. Luke's College in KC, MO. Just wondering if there was anyone starting or attending school now. I really loved my experience there and just wanted to see what others thought. I felt really prepared once I graduated.
  11. She did have a ua and c&s done on wed. and it all came back negative. It is sunday evening and so far so good today except for some fussiness and decreased appetite. I can't seem to get her to eat very well. She is scheduled for her 1 year well visit on Friday (it has had to be postponed for 2 weeks d/t these fevers) and I go back to work on tuesday, so I guess we will see what tomorrow brings. Thanks for all the replies!
  12. She only acts ill when the temp is high (fussy, tired, not eating) but once the fever breaks she is fine.
  13. She only has her two bottom teeth, and today I did see a top one poking through, however I have trouble thinking that she would spike as high as 103.4 just for teeth. I would however be relieved if that was it, but what a horrible past 6 days just for a tooth :) And if these fevers continue, what am I going to do about daycare, they will not take her with a fever.
  14. My daughter just turned a year old and for the past 6 days has been spiking high temps (the highest being 103.4). I took her to the doctor and they said that everything looked ok (throat, ears, and urine). I called again today since she still spikes (101.4) today, they said to continue to watch it and call back in two days if it hasn't gone away. Motrin helps, but the fever still comes back and I just want to help my little girl. Has anyone else experienced this? My doctor's office also told me today that they have had other calls of kids with high fevers and no other symptoms. I guess the nurse in me just wants to know a cause and it bothers me that she keeps spiking these fevers with no other symptoms for 6 days.
