    Out Of BEDSIDE nursing

oh boy i sure can relate to that! after 20 years i have had enough of a situation that is getting worse & so i am doing a masters in education & will affect pt care from the schools. It will also give me the option of registering as a teacher and leaving nursing all together to teach highschool

    Florence Nightingale

Sr Kenny was an Australian who treated polio with more success than the medical proffession and in fact treated one of the American presidents. I thought she was world famous, obviously I was wrong. I see no need to mourn for Flo just to acknowledge her place in our proffessional history

    Nursing shortage, patient care

P.S. Some hospitals even have aprons for nurses that say 'i am giving out medication please do not disturb me'

    Nursing shortage, patient care

The best way to minimise medication errors is to remember you are one of many patients that the nurse has on her mind during the shift. DO NOT MAKE TRIVIAL REQUESTS when you can see that the nurse is trying to give either yours or someone else's medications. Be considerate and wait or, just say, I need your help once you have finished that PLEASE

    Wierd Question.

I work with lots of asian nurses most of whom are female but there are also several males. They are all mostly Phillipino or Singaporean.

Anyone have cheese? I need to whine !!!

Don't let the SOB's force you to change jobs until it suits you! Don't you guys have a nurses union over there? It sounds as though Australian nurses are slightly better off when it comes to sick leave. We may cop attitude from above but they can DO nothing for fear of harrassment charges (a big issue down here) I always find it amazing how we are exposing ourselves to illness everyday and yet we are not supposed to get sick. I work in a respiratory unit and get coughed on every day, of course I will get sick every now and then! Adminstrators also forget that sometimes patients and staff are endangered by having unfit staff turn up for work!

If nurses ignore their historical leaders and what they represented then we will be lost. How can we benchmark our acheivements as a profession if we forget these women who have helped to take us out of the convents and whorehouses. Are we also to forget Sr Kenny? Another nurse ahead of her time. Lets not forget that these women not only advanced our profession but also have exerted great influence over the medical profession in their time, if nurses ignore their own accomplishments then that will suit the medical profession quite well to also ignore them and to continue to see us their subordinates rather than as the coworkers we truly are.

    Meds at bedside

i work in a respiratory unit in an Australian private hospital. Patients complain if arosols are taken away. One patient was abusing his Salbutamol and so the puffer was locked up, he rang Admin and we recieved a phonecall on the ward from the CEO demanding we returned the patient's property!

    reasonable,prudent and no parameters?

you did the right thing! patient safety is utmost! does everyone find the same thing happening with digoxin these days, no pulse check because it doesn't get done at home! isn't it amazing though how much a nurse can pick up if he/she does the job properly.

Who is REALLY GOOD with needles?

hey you cant be any worse than the student that asked me where the orange was. She thought patients actually ate the orange after you injected it!
  14. how about an "i am not the only patient in the ward " pill?

    Part Time RN's

Australia is also hard hit by the nusing shortage and yet hospitals are not as flexible as they sound over there. Many places here still believe that you should be sitting around on your days off waiting to be called in for an extra shift or two. Admin can't understand why nurses don't continually put their hands up for double shifts that are pitifully staffed with workloads to break you in two
