  1. Items You Carry Daily in the Hospital

I have a little black bag that I can stuff with scissors, pens, extra various kinds of tape, bandaids, hemostats, etc. What I keep on me at all times during shift is two pens, NS flushes, scissors, tape, and small hemostats. These come in handy!
  2. I put in resumes and called facilities to ask if there were any positions available. Most hospitals now show their positions online as well, just type in the name of the hospital and the location to find their website. I got my job around my commun...
  3. What time do you expect your relief nurse to show up?

On a late day, I do get to my floor right at 6:45pm, but most of the time I am there by 6:30pm. I do expect that my relief nurse be here for me by 0645 but on some days that isn't very realistic. One day my car ran hot, and if I didn't leave at my ...
  4. I had a patient whom I swear got sneaked some kind of speeder. She was fine before her family member came over to visit. But, whoa buddy, when that person left, I had a problem on my hands. She was yelling down the hall, talking 90 to nothing, and ma...
  5. Pain relief with elderly...

I have had about 5 patients in the last month that were on some kind of pain relief during the night. These meds are usually on the lists: Lortab, Morphine, Demerol, and Dilaudid. I had one patient that was on comfort measures with hospice that was g...
  6. Murphy's Laws of Nursing | Life of a Nurse

I really needed this right now! Is it bad when you can check off about 90% on that list? Laughter is the best medicine.
  7. Shout out... I passed Biology!!!!!!

Congrats, a C is passing in everybody's book. Once I made a C in one of my nursing classes. It was a rough semester for me and I was grateful for another chance to prove that I deserved being there. A C is great!
  8. New Nurse Confidence?

I am a new nurse as of March. I landed a job on a cardiology floor which specializes in angiograms and pacemaker insertion. The majority of our patients are cardiac in nature, but we are getting an influx of diverse med surg patients because our fl...

  10. I think mine is a Code Brown story as well. I had a patient who hadn't had a BM in a few days because she was on a heap of pain medications. Dr. prescribed her some anti-constipation drugs and behold she needed to go. Well, I put the bedside commode...
  11. immature nursing students

We had a few of these in my nursing classes. They were either weeded out or they were enlightened. Some may have eventually made it through, but they ended up failing the first semester or so because they didn't take nursing seriously. I know of a fe...
  12. We had 40 people in one block class, of those 40 about 7 were male. However, they didn't let us girls outshine them! They all had great personalities. I miss being in that class setting! :)

When you try to call an elevator with pushing the unlock button on your car keys...lol, I was sick that day and very tired!
  14. How often do you get sick?

The last time that I was sick was when I was nearly out of nursing school (probably May). I usually get sick once a year with something like a cold but then after that, I am usually sickness free. *Knock on wood. I do take vitamins, but I doubt t...
  15. Stethoscope cleaning

We have these little tubs of sani-cloths that are disposable. I always wear gloves when using it to wipe off my steth because the germicidals are so strong that they can kill the aids virus (and I don't want something that strong on my skin!) I let...
