Let's see. What freaks me out.....Well, I work as a home health aide with a patient that has a trach, so sputum doesn't bother me in the least. Poop, no biggy-it's just natural. Vomit, also natural. Well to get to the bottom of it: I had a liver and a kidney transplant and a colectomy, so I pretty much experienced it all myslef without being a nurse. I had the JP drains (3 at once), the NG tubes, the central lines, the foleys, six IV;s at once, over 100 staples in 3 surgeries. Hmmmmmmm, did I forget anything? Oh yes I've had quite a few liver biopsies and colonoscopies before. Drank that nasty golightly too. So, I;'ve seen it , felt it, smelt it, and dealt it.

AT a local hospital near me, you can only have two earrings in each ear, nothing real big, and you cannot have artificial fingernails; you are allowed to wear whatever make up you want though as far as I know. I once saw a tech wearing an eyebrow piercing, but never a nurse. I personally think its not professional.

I don't know the effects of IBS, but I had colitis diagnosed along with sclerosing cholangitis ( liver disease). The doctor predicted I would have to have my colon out in ten years from time of dx. I never had any problems with my colitis at first- it didn't even bother me really, kinda like I didn't have it. Well, I had a liver transplant when I was 13 in 1993 and four years later my colitis flared up all the time. I had bloody diarrhea, lost alot of weight, was dehydrated; my creatinine went up to 11.7 once. I was in the hospital millions of times. I had to have my entire colon removed in 1999. I have to admit though my symptoms of colitis came on rather sudden, but I had a strong appetite, bu ti could only eat bland food. When my colitis was flared, I had some terrible sharp stomach pains, especially if I tried to eat somethingi shouldn't have eaten. So, I guess IBS can show up as just stomach pains, maybe at times it can be worse than others, and I don't know if it gets worse over time. My experience with colitis was different from some others, so I guess every patient will experiecne different symptoms. Christine

Med surg can be a good learning experience if you have the right teacher. My first clinical rotation in med surg was great cause i had a great instructor and cool nurses to wor with. On my second med surg rotation it sucked , my instructor hated me and never explained anyting to me, she expected me to do and know everytning, not willing to help and she made the nurses see as a dumb nursing student - very upsetting. I graduate this May 2003, and I would rather work on a pediatric unit or I am also interested in dialysis nursing. Christine
