Thank you so much furball, that is exactly the kind of info i was looking for. I am going to take it to the manager tomorrow and see what she says. She is new to the organization too so maybe something might actually get done!

that was what I thought too, but what do I do if the filter needles are not available to me? Am I putting my patients at risk?

I am new to traveling outside my state and recently discovered how big some differences are across the country. My question is this, Is it a practice to use filter needles when drawing up medication out of a glass ampule where you are? That had always been my practice until recently a hospital I am traveling to siad they don't even have filter needles or know what they are. I was just curious to see what is the standard across the country.
  4. I went into oncology by accident, I originally wanted peds, but alas there were no positions open on that unit. There was however an oncology opening and so I took it knowing nothing about what I was getting myself into. 5 years and two hospitals later I am still in oncology and loving it. I can't imagine doing anything else. Currently I am working BMT which sees a smaller division of oncology patients but it is so great working with the same patients everyday and getting involoved with their families.
  5. When I started 5 years ago right out of school on a renal/oncology floor I was not allowed to hang chemo or do anything chemo related until 6 months after being on the floor. Then I had a two week class with detailed oncology information and had to pass a test before I could hang chemo. The hospital I am at now starts their new orientees out much the same way as you described although they try not to give the new nurses the chemo patients if possible.
