Hey there! A couple of other nurses and I are having an issue these days with staffing. Now that our manager has quit, we're going to be in piles of poo poo because she would actually cover for day and nocturnal shifts. She got a little burned out. We were wondering what it's like in other Fresenius facilities in the US. We're currently in GA where the ratio is 10:1 & 4:1. However, there new thing is to make a nurse have 4-5 herself as well as assess the other 4-5. Or in the case of nocturnal, we have 5 staff, two nurses, and 20 patients. Is that how y'all do it?

OMG you sound like me! Like JUST like me! Only I'm over 2 years in now. I started out in a situation that sounds so ridiculously similar to yours. The funny thing is now, I kind of appreciate the hard *ss tech who trained me. She was a good tech. Bad communicator. Horrible trainer. But what she said still sticks with me today. I have left that facility and moved on to a better (somewhat) environment. I've worked for both of the big two. I'm going to try home hemo hopefully next. I'm getting frustrated with the whole scenario of staffing and drama and crappy people in general. I've come to realize, though, it's just part of the medical field. I also did realize how much I respect my patients because they are miserable. All of them, but not all of them let it get to them. Some people click with other people. Other people click with totally different people. It takes all kinds to make a good team. Once you spend a year listening to their stories, you start to realized how petty all the other crap is. They go through H*LL and still come every other day. I do it for them.

Well, here is the plan, in my head anyway. I'm hoping to do the MSN program that is usually done in 2 years, but take a little more time. That way, I'll be done with my degree about the same time my little girl goes to school. I stay up all night most nights as it is, so I figured night shift would be my best bet, and then have grandmother and daddy babysit for weekends etc. Is my perfect little plan flawed? Can you even start out on night shift? How does that work exactly? Also, is there such thing as part time nursing?

If you were a 25 year old with a bachelor's degree in animal science, didn't use it, has a 15 month old precious baby girl and an embroidery business that takes away from your family and housework constantly anyway, would you go back to school to get your MSN through Medical School of Georgia's program for people with bachelors in other degrees? Or would you go to the tech school and get an Associates in R.N. faster? Would you go at all? It's not just for the money, though it would help, but also because I researched all your answers for what makes a good nurse, and I have most of the qualities, including a big bladder. I would appreciate anybodies opinion!! I'm just trying to find my place in the world! Thanks for your time!!!
