  1. I previously attentded an ADN program for a full year and failed my med-surg final by 4 points. Depressing, yes!...I'm ready to pick up and start again with nursing because I really do have a passion for the field. I have completeted ALL of my pre-reqs and all I need to do is re-do the nursing and clinicals. Problem is, I'm 21 years old and do not receive any help financially. Because of this, I've decided that I'm going to go the LPN->RN route instead of reapplying to an RN program. Furthermore, I think I'll do a nights and evenings LPN program as well because I absolutely must work at least 25 hours a week in order to survive. I know that me doing the part time LPN will only take longer, but since I've already had a failed attempt at nursing I'm trying to be realistic about the load I'll be able to handle. I just want to have a career, benefits and a home already!!!!
  2. I received my C-net study guide today for the BALC entrance exam. Who else is taking this? Let me know when you get your test dates!!
  3. [color=#dd5800]veebs contact info is (516) 572-1704 the application fee is $150.00 though, and its 10,000 as opposed to the 2,000 at balc...but its always good to keep your options open.
  4. This question is for those of you who have been through or are going through the nursing program @ Excelsior. I'm planning on enrolling in the future, just wondering if you can tell me how long it took to complete (all the tests) ...The admissions dept. told me 24 months but I plan to study between 12-20 hours a week, so I think I can get it done faster. Anyone else who did this in a shorter time span? Any other additional info about exclesior would help..sofar it seems like a Godsend & I wish I would hav heard about it sooner!!!!
  5. I would like to add that what is said before is just MY opinion. I've seen people work & go to school full time and be successful
  6. To be honest, it's impossible to work full time and go to nursing school full time. The amount of hours you will need to study is A LOT. I wouldnt even recommend working part time, maybe just on the weekends if you must. I highly recommend taking out student loans for the time you are in school to pay for the cost of living. It will give you a lot of extra time to study which will significantly increase your grades and it will all pay off in the end.
  7. My prayers are with you and your classmates. I'm sure you'll all prevail =)
  8. The A&P 1 and 2 is not bad. The great thing is that many bookstores like Barnes and Noble offer SO many study guides for A&P that really break it down for you. The math is very basic. It's the nursing courses themselves that are the toughies!
  9. I recently attended nursing school but unfortunately failed my med-serg by only a few points and therefore was ejected from the school . I'll be applying to several private colleges in the NY/NJ area over the next few weeks. I'm a bit worried though, because the med-serg was a P or F class and I now have an F on my transcript. I'm afriad this will affect my being accepting to another school. I mean..I'm sure theres people out there that have failed a nursing course, picked themselves back up and went on to be a successful RN..am i wrong? So I'll be applying for the LPN programs as well because I might just work my way to becoming an RN (maybe through excelsior?) What are the LPN programs like? How long in length and generally how much is tuition? Are they as difficult as nursing classes? And what about job placement- do LPN's get hired right out of school? Hmmmm...any help would be wonderful =)
  10. When your in nursing school..work is impossible. When youve got to learn 200 pages of clinical manifestations in a week it makes it very difficult to work...of course, everyone needs to live and make money but my suggestion (after making the huge mistake of working and school) is to apply for loans and work as minimal as possible while in school. I too, wish that I had known about this site before I started school. It is SO helpful.
  11. P.S..I went to Saint Vincents Catholic Medical Center. They have two nursing programs: one in staten island and I believe the other one is in queens. The passing grade is an 80, which is a bit higher than most schools but it IS a good school.
  12. It really depends on the school. Some will allow you to begin the nursing program while you still complete your pre-reqs. In the school I went to, we had a few girls straight from high school that were taking all of the pre-reqs while taking the nursing courses. Of course, this makes it a lot harder, but it's possible. Best of luck
  13. I'd also like to add that before starting A&P I had no knowledge of science at all! As long as do the assigned readings and look at your notes a few times a week you'll breeze by. PROMISE!
  14. The pre-reqs really arent so bad. Don't let some silly science classes get in the way of pursuing nursing. The go by really quick and there is always tutoring available. Theres also PLENTY of rewiew books and "For Dummies" books available in Barnes & Noble for Anatomy & Phys as well as Micro. Best of luck
  15. I was enrolled in an Associates degree nursing program for a full year. I did very well in the Foundations of Nursing(first semester) as well as the clinical aspects. However, when Med-Serg rolled around I had a harder time with it. The passing grade in the school was an 80, and I received a 76 on my final exam which resulted in a grade of an F and to be terminated from the school. It was completely devestating and discouraging. 6 months later I'm ready to get back into nursing school and I'm currently searching for one in the NY/NJ area My parents no longer support my decision to be a nurse because they refuse to pay for school anymore. I am desperately seeking advice about student loans/grants/scholarships/financial aid. I am a young Caucasian female and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get through school. I'm worried that I'm going to have a hard time getting a loan because I don't have good credit and I don't have anyone to cosign. I dont know why they make it so hard for someone to get into school to be a nurse when theres such a shortage! I really need some guidance, since I'm doing this all on my own. Any input can help Thank you, TD.
