  1. Just had this happen to me TWICE in the last week. First was a grand multip x7 admitted at 3cm's epidural at 5cm's. Of course I THOUGHT I was watching her like a hawk. Noticed some decels in the strip and lifted the sheet to check her and was greeted by a little blond noggin. Second was a G2. OB checks her and she's 7cm. He tells me she had a very prolonged 2nd stage with last baby due to small pelvis (was induced at 38weeks this time) and to let her labor down a bit at complete since she has an epi. Well, murphy's law.... she precip'd on me as I was calling down for anesthesia to bring a refill on the epi. I hear from the room dad yelling "nurse! I think somethings coming out" and run in to see him catching his son. Oy These things happen, and like a pp said it's just proof that women CAN still deliver babies without us screaming push and counting.... nature knows what it's doing. Kat
  2. I have one. pt comes in c/o contractions. Showing on the monitor every 8-10. Mom is moving around a lot so we are having trouble getting a good tracing on baby. OB comes in and asks pt if she's ruptured her membranes, pt denies. Doc decides to put in a scalp monitor. When he does we get a nice trickle of clear fluid which doc swabs and then walks out of the room saying "i'm going to go see if there's any ferning"........ What?? I just kept my mouth shut and had a good chuckle later.
  3. Hi, I've been nursing for 10 years, in labor and delivery for 4. Last night we had a pt come in with her doula. I work in a smallish hospital and I nor any of the other unit staff on had worked with a Doula before. I felt really insecure! The Doula was great. Very smart and was great with pt but I guess I didn't really know my "place" if you kwim? I pretty much just spent my time in the room charting. At one point pt literally had her husband by the throat begging him to help her and crying and asking why nobody was helping her. Just about the time I was wondering how long I should let her beg she was complete thank god. Anyone else work with Doulas? What's our role in labor support? My gut told me to just do my job and let the doula work around me, but that was difficult to do with someone else in the room who was "calling the shots" so to speak. Any tips for next time? Kat
