Ok...I was told that if you use a catheter for suctioning, you should do the nasal route first then oral b/c the mouth is dirtier. But I had student nurses come on our unit and their instructor told them to do oral first then nasal because "you wouldn't eat your boogers, right?". Am I missing something?

I just bought the Critical Care Made Incredibly Easy book (2nd Ed.) and was wondering if anyone has it and what they think of it. I am halfway thru my orientation in ICU and wanted a general reference book to keep me on my toes. Thanks for any responses! Michele

Don't be nervous about meeting your patients. Talk to them, get to know them. They will most likely be willing to tell you everything about them and what they've been through. Get good at doing your head to toe assessments. Do an assessment everytime you enter your patients room. If your patient's nurse isn't the friendliest, make her/him talk to you. Ask questions, get a good report. They may not volunteer info, but they can't deny you if you ask direct questions.

I'm starting the second semester of my first year of an Assoc. program. I currently work as a nurse tech in the ICU. My intention was to start in this unit upon graduation. However, when I spoke with one nurse (of 20years), he thinks that new grads starting in the ICU isn't a good idea and that they need more training. What opinions are out there? This particular ICU is small (8 beds). Should I look to start off somewhere else? If so, where? FYI...new grads get 3 months of training with a preceptor before going on their own. Another FYI...I'm a 34 year old married woman with a toddler and one on the way, and I'm looking to start my career off right without wasting time but wanting to be the best I can be.
