What are the benefits and downsides of being a nurse?
I just wanted to have an idea of what I was getting into before nursing school starts. Thanks, Cherry :nuke:

Is there such a thing as being too thin to be nurse?
Actually I don't have an eating disorder but I'm afraid that is what people will think. I have always been underweight and have a very small frame. Since I have been out of nursing school I have gained five pounds and am trying to make it to 90 before I start back. I'm not sure if it will be enough though. I don't really look sick I'm just thin. My doctor actually thinks I have a hormone problem because the amount of food I can eat is above average. When I went into the nursing program I was so stressed out and working all the time I could not eat as much and I lost 10 pounds. I don't know if they'll accept me or not but it is the only thing I have a passion about.

I'm afraid of not being accepted into the BSN program at AUM next Fall. I weigh 84 lbs and am 5'3. Will they judge me on my appearance? There is an interview involved as well as GPA. I have 3 pre-nursing courses left to tackle nutrition, sociology, and principles of biology. I'm taking a few classes that don't go for nursing in case I'm not accepted. I have been accepted in an ASN program before but had to drop out because of health problems will that hurt my chances of being accepted? I believe nursing is what I want but I would sure love to shadow a nurse if my parents would let me Unfortunatly they are very protective and are afraid I'll get sick. I know they mean well but I really think I need to do this.

Is nursing for me?
Wow! I didn't expect so many words of encouragement. Thank you guys so much I really needed it. I'm really serious about this profession and have been eating and exercising more to gain a little weight and muscle because my family tells me the programs won't accept thin and fragile nurses. I want to show them how much it means to me and that this decision is the only thing that fills my heart with contentment and peace unlike anything else. Thank you all again for taking the time to respond! -Kimberly :redpinkhe

Is nursing for me?
I'm worried that nursing might not be for me. I have taken almost all of the preriquites necessary and have a 4.0 average. Nursing scares me to death and I don't know what to do. :uhoh21: I'm getting really stressed out because my parents keep warning me it's not really a great job and is looked down upon by people and the doctors treat you like trash and cuss you out. Is that true? Are most of the patients rude and mean? What is the worst thing I should know about nursing? Spare me nothing please. I want to know everything nurses do throughout the day. If I'm underweight and weak would that be a problem considering I may have to lift patients and ambulate them? Is it hard to stick someone with an IV? Is it difficult to empty a bedpan? Nursing is the only thing that interests me I tried accounting but found it really boring. I want excitement and a reason to live by helping others. One more question is it true that nurses spend most of their time charting and doing paperwork? -Kimberly

Which program is best?
I have finished all my preriquisites for the ASN program but only lack one semester to finish those for the BSN. What should I do? I am more likely to be accepted into the ASN because the other is so competitive. There are two BSN programs and both are a long distance from my house. One accepts students SPRING 2009 the other FALL 2009. The one that accepts in Spring is 2 hrs distance from my house. The one that accepts students in Fall is 1 hr distance. What should I do? I really would prefer to go ahead and get my BSN since I've heard some bad things about the ASN program which is nearby. -CherryB
