  1. I work in a small, physician-owned, for profit hospital. I have seen abuse and have experienced it. You really have to pick your battles depending on surgeon. There are times to report it and times to deal with it yourself. One of our "big time" owners is truly a sociopath. Among other things. HE is the ONLY surgeon who has ever belittled me routinely. I have NEVER been treated so rudely in my life. I chose to do nothing - except refuse to EVER work in his room. There are some personalities that should absolutely NOT work together. This works very well. Other surgeons and/or anesthesiologists? I get along with all the rest. I have a VERY strong personality and if someone starts being an a***ole with me, I either give it right back, or start treating them like a child. It works for me. Going to HR? Or management? At my workplace? Hahaha! That's funny. The Golden Rule applies there. "Whoever has the gold, makes the rules." Pretty much true for all of healthcare. ESPECIALLY in a for-profit hospital. I usually enjoy "managing the personalities." Works well for me.
  2. Wow! I didn't wish to offend. Lo pay and hi expectations: reason number 312 why healthcare is going down the tubes. Sorry!
  3. I"ll be 40 at the end of this year. By then, it'll be almost 7 years in the OR. Ten in nursing. When I started nursing school, they told us that ten years is the average time before nursing burn out sets in. Very true! I'm looking for other opportunities. I'm done. My compassion has been beat out of me by Healthcare as an entity and by narcissistic surgeons. It's all about the money these days. I won't rant about Healthcare as a whole, because quite frankly the whole thing is quite disgusting. I don't have a Bachelor's degree nor do I want it. I don't enjoy management nor do I wish to learn more about what I believed to be a wonderful profession (I'm a fourth generation nurse). Nuff said. As far as what I think you should do??? Follow your heart, your gut and find your true passion. Then find a way to make money with that. I really empathisize with you. You've spent a LOT of time in the cold dank pit known as the OR. Good luck and God bless for hanging in so long.
  4. Are you people kidding me? Anything less than $25/hr is a complete and utter insult! The OR is hard HARD work. I'm in AZ and I get $30/hr. At this juncture in my career, that amount of money is getting to be not enough. Granted, you usually don't have to deal with awake patients or their families ... but having to deal with narcissistic surgeons (the majority of them really are), turnover times not fast enough, administration riding your butt (turnover is never fast enough!), vendors, catty scrub techs, moving unbelievably heavy furniture, and faster, faster, faster ... double the 30/hr and MAYBE it'll be acceptable.:monkeydance:
