PVAMU-Fall 2007
No finding a job wasnt easy..there's a BIG hiring freeze around the medical center but NS doesn't tell you that, you just have to be persistent and prayerful and it eventually will come. As for PV preparing me..yes and no..i'm learning more through on the job training and i'm still learning how to be a proficient nurse. Best advice i can give you, when you get into semester 3 start applying for the psne programs the hospitals have..it will make getting a job easy down the line.

Infection control resources???
what april31099 posted was what i used when studying isolation. it really helped because nclex throws out a lot of isolation and infection control questions at you. also the cdc website was also of help. good luck to you on your exam

Kaplan QBank
Kaplan for the live class review, qbank and qtrainer it was $499, not sure how much qbank is . what does the 299 entail?

NCLEX in March. What to use? How to study?
I used kaplan/hurst/saunders to study 4 nclex. i used Saunders mostly for content, electrolytes, disease processes. I have nclex 3500 and nclex 4000 through school and i found 4000 more difficult than 3500 in answering the questions. Content is content no matter what u are using for it, with questions i found out that kaplans questions are really similar to what u see on nclex. i didn't feel i was strong in content so i read content then went and did questions and read the rationales. And you are right it is time consuming.

how do I pass Med-surg!!
Im going to be taking MedSug2 in the fall, MedSurg 1 was hard but i used to go and talk to my instructors the best advice i ever got while taking Medsurg1 was when doing your reading ask yourself "what will the nurse do". For example if the pt. will need surgery what should you do preop/postop, what pt teaching can you do. I used questions like this to focus my reading, also it may help to know values of things RBC, WBC and so on, I sometimes overlooked that and when a value was placed in the question I wouldnt know if it was normal or abnormal and at times that could havehelped me pick the right answers.

The Nursing Math Thread
Hi all. I have a question regarding calculating caloric intake for infants. I tried using my Calculate with Confidence by Morris but no help. I will be seeing alot more of these problems in pedi but i still have a problem working them out. Please I would like some advice on how to work them, where to start, basically any advice in working them. also if you may know of a website were i can gain more practice in doing them. Thanks for your input on how to work these types of problems. I have placed an example of what i mean below. An infant has an IV of D10W running @15cc/hr. The child weighs 10lbs nd 12oz. The following feeding orders were written: Beginning@ 9am, give 18cc of Similac 24 q3 hrs x1, if tolerated, rduce IV to 10cc/hr & increase feeding to 30cc q3hrs x2, if tolerated, reduce the IV to 5cc/hr & increase formula to 45cc q3hrs x3, if tolerated, d/c the IV & advance formula to 60cc q3hrs. 1. Based on body weight, what is the minimum number of calories required by the infant in a 24hr period? 2. How many calories will the infant recieve in a 24hr period? 3. What is the minimum amount of fluid required by the infant in a 24hr period? 4. How many cc's of fluid will the infant recieve in a 24hr period?

I am so bummed out. GPA makes me sad.
Dont beat yourself too much over it. Try and apply to as many schools as you can. The nursing school i go to they took some people with GPA as low as 2.5 while those with a 3.6 and higher they didnt accept. Do well on your NET and essay. Wish you lots of luck

Failed out of nursing sch. waited a yr and they are not accepting me again.
hi bibish sorry about your current situation but dont let that get you down, if you know that nursing is what you truly want to do then dont give up, and dont worry about your familys "disappointment". i failed a course my first semester in nursing school and everyone kept saying "how do you fail in first semester, thats the easiest semester." truth be told nothing is easy about nursing, it involves alot of critical thinking and application skills. anyway most schools that do bsn application deadline for the fall08 have passed, but spring 09 is still available. here are the schools in houston/dallas that i know do bsn programs. pvamu con-deadlines for application are march 1st for fall admission and october 1st for spring admission. http://www.pvamu.edu/pages/1017.asp hbu con- may 1st is the deadline for the fall admission. (just missed that deadline) december 1st is the deadline for the spring admission. http://www.hbu.edu/hbu/prospective_students.asp?snid=1898176960 twu con-houston branch you might check out the dallas branch too. february 1 for fall admission september 1 for spring admission uta con- this is in arlington texas (by dallas-fort worth) fall semester deadline is january 2 and spring semester deadline is june 1
