Perdiem as fulltime?
It's a per diem job for a hospital system covering 5 hospitals. I haven't started yet besides orientation and I'm already getting emails about great needs and offering an extra $20 more on top of my base pay. I do know it can have it's ups and downs since I'm sure people are on summer vacation now and such and so that maybe why there is a greater need now, but that's promising.

Perdiem as fulltime?
Oh we would for sure get health insurance from somewhere. Too risky. But yeah, the time off would be unpaid. I'm not worried about 401K, we have Roth IRAs that my husband sets up because he does that for his job. I do worry about cancelled shifts.

Perdiem as fulltime?
Hello everyone. Not sure if this is where to ask this question but here it goes. I work full time at a hospital. I work 12 hours overtime to get by with bills. I put in and got a perdiem job at another hospital system. Minimim requiements of 24 hours a month. It pays $12 more an hour. My husband and I were thinking, why not work the perdiem job as full time. I could make the same amount of money working 3 days a week there as I do working 4 days here with no weekend or holiday requirements? Downfall...no benefits. A good friend of ours gets health insurance on their own (family of 5) for $250, which is less than is taken out of my paycheck now. Anyone else do something like this? Oh and no my husband isn't able to get insurance though his job. Then I think about what if I'm sick, it goes unpaid. Anyone else know of any other things to think about as well?

death and dying
I just starting training in ICU recently. In my old unit, we didn't come across death too often. Yesterday, I had my first patient die. Do any of you have any good advise on how to be prepared for this and "get use to" death. I know you can't really "get use to" it, but I want to be able to help the patient and family though this hard time without being afraid myself of the situation. Being new to it, I must say I am uncomfortable. Any hints or helpful advise for me? Thanks so much for your help.

to train or not?
Hello. I have a problem. I currently work as a step down cardiac nurse. My boss recently asked me if I feel ready to train for ICU. I have been a nurse for a year now on the floor. I know the floor well and love the people. My problem is I really want to learn and know all about ICU and be a ICU nurse in our cardiac floor, but I'm very scaried. It's a huge step for me. I'll work with new people, different environment, and with much sicker people. I really love where I work, but have always wanted to expand my knowledge and skills. Should I go for it and train or not? Any advice for preparing for ICU training? Anyone done it recently and have tips or likes and dislikes about it they want to share? I'm open for ideas and opinions. Thanks!

Lowest blood sugar you have seen
My patient had a sugar of 11 the other day. :bugeyes:Surprisingly she came right out of it very quickly. No lasting affects. Thank goodness.

12 hours vs 8 hours shifts
Hello everyone. I just wanted to know if anyone else has this problem. I work 3 12 hour shifts a week and pick up a couple extra shifts a month. My fiance works at a job where he has to work 6 8 hour shifts a week. He is understanding that I work hard, but yet many times after he comes home from work on a day I had off, he says things like "well you had all day to decide what is for dinner, I had to work today". or he says things like "Some of us have to work 48 hours or more this week..." He sometimes acts like I should pick up more overtime than I do, which I guess I could but sometimes I enjoy having a job that doesn't require to work 6 days a week and I think I earned it after surviving nursing school. I guess I could pick up more overtime but I still wish I wasn't treated like I only work part time or don't do my share of bringing home the money. (BTW we make pretty close to the same amount of money maybe he makes a bit more since he works more hours but the pay is pretty close). Thanks for listening to me vent everyone. I just needed to share my opinions.
