  1. I am a nurse entrepeneur. I was a RN for over 25 years. I read all these posts and they all have one thing in common. Everyone is focusing on finding a business in the health care field. Don't tie yourself down to one area. Use your work ethic and business knowledge you gained from nursing to expand into any field you want to. The world is your oyster. My wife and I bought a retail gift franchise. I also bought a farm. Both are so fun and rewarding. Just keep your mind open to any opportunity. You will not be turning your back on your education, you are only using it in a different way.
  2. Posteror, see my reply posted today.
  3. The reason SCDs work is that they compress striated muscle which causes the muscles to produce nitrous oxide into the circulatory system. The nitrous oxide is a great vasal dilator which helps prevent blood clots. This is why SCDs are also effective when used on the arms, even one arm or one leg. Therefore the inflatable part should be used over the posterior part of the leg over the muscle.
  4. Have you tried to Google this form? I don't know if you can find one specific to nursing, but you can get a general form and make it specific to your needs. If found a free one at All Law - Forms - Employment - Independant Contractors Agreement but you can find lots that cost a little.
  5. Let me just say a word here as an RN for 20 years and a Registered Financial Counselor. You are in a pickle that's for sure. But it is one of your own choosing so stick with the course. But I would advise against any further loans. Of course I don't know all of your financial situation. As a financial planner I would find out all I could about you and your family before giving any advice. But I have seen this time and time again. Taking out loans to live on while going to school. Debt is a killer. Nothing kills marriages more frequently or quickly than debt and money problems. Be tired now, or be tired later, which do you want to do? Do what you have to do but I urge you to flee from the "easy way out" which will turn out to be not so easy according to my observations.
  6. I have heard of a new product that may dramatically improve compliance with SCD's. It runs on a battery and goes around just the feet. Research has also shown that SCD's on the feet are just as effective as calf or thigh high SCD's.
  7. No I have not seen anything about this. Would you know where I could see that research? I would be very interested.
  8. Thanks for all the responses. Compliance is really the big issue with SCD's/TED's. From the research I have read, there is a better compliance rate withe the SCD's. Maybe because they are a little easier to put on. But I have been doing compliance studies in my hospital for a year and have not found a better compliance with SCD's at all. In fact, TED hose has a slightly better rate. This may be due to the fact that TED hose are kept right on the unit whereas SCD's must be sent for from Central Supply. Have any of you seen a compliance rate difference b/w the two?
  9. I love this site. But I see most people posting are interested in starting a business that is health-care related. Why limit yourself? I know you are wanting to take advantage of your education, and there is certainly nothing wrong with starting a health-related business, but is that really what you love doing? Is there some other interest you have that you would love doing? Wouldn't you like to do something that you looked forward to doing when you get up in the morning? Something that really taps the creative juices within you? My wife and I are both RN's and have been for many, many years. We recently started our own busines, she a candy store and I a tax preparation business. That may not sound like fun to you, but to us it's heaven. It's something that we both love doing and will be able to do for as long as we wish. I hate to say, "Think outside the box," since it is a old and trite saying, but since I just said it...
  10. I work at a VA hospital and it is common practice for our MD's to order sequential compression devices and TED hose to be used simultaneously. From the research I have done, there is no additive effect. What does your hospital do, use both at the same time or one-or-the-other?
  11. I have been an RN for 20 years, but I am also a Registered Financial Counselor. The answer is no. The main purpose of incorporating as an S or forming an LLC is to protect yourself from liability. If you have firm assurance from your malpractice insurance that you are covered, then you probably wouldn't need to incorporate. I would double check with a lawyer in your state. Our business is litigation crazy as you know. Ask him/her if there is any possibility someone can sue you personally without, or in addition to, making it a malpractice suit. If there is, don't risk it, forming an LLC (which I would reccomend), is not that expensive (certainly a lot less expensive than your house, which they could take). Quickbooks is very good, but also very expensive. I have 2 business and do not use anything more than a $2 ledger I get from Wal Mart. My expertise is taxes, if you have any more questions.
  12. Getting back to the original point of this thread, some people make the choice to buy health insurance, and some don't. Some cannot make that choice. I know all these are true. I am an RN but I also am a Registered Financial Counselor. I have seen nothing to dispute Kitkat's statistics, many of my clients do not buy insurance because they would rather spend the money on something else, even though I urge them to do so. I also have many clients that cannot afford health insurance if it were half as cheap. They are dire financial straits, but the question remains, how did they get there? Your financial status is a direct result of your choices. Your job, your marriage, your children, your education are choices. I have made some monumental bad choices in my life that is why I have chosen to become a financial counselor so I can help my fellow nurses make some better choices and get a little more better off financially.
