  1. You may want to look into the nursing scholarship program that is offered by the Health Resources and Services Administration. If you qualify they will pay 100% plus a monthly stipend while you are in school. Repayment is a 2 year committment in an area of the country that has a critical nurse shortage.
  2. Thanks , this program sounds great to me! Only one problem I have emailed an adviser and left a couple messages on her voice mail and still no reponse back. Do you have a name and # of someone that you recommend I talk to? Would love to get things started ASAP . Thanks a mill!
  3. Congratulaitons erRn on the new job and passing NCLEX!!!!! WTG! As far as the new position goes....just remember there will be tons to learn and the fact that you are ALREADY asking questions tells me that you will do fine. The lkearning never stops in nursing. I think getting off on the right foot in the beginning with your preceptor is crucial, the remaining staff will almost always follow her lead. AKS ASK ASK and always be willing to show them that you are willing to work even if it is something that a tech can do. If you get them to see your always willing it will make your jab easier in the long run. ER can be very intimidating but such an awesome and rewarding (at times) area to work! Best of luck and please keep us posted on how it's going!
  4. Hi CSIMS, I too am looking into the STRAP program through the reserves. The recruiter that I am talking to has made it sound like I would not be deployed before officers training however Im not completely convinced. Seems like some things I am told are not the same as what I hear from other reservists. As far as the 90days per 12 months. I dont think that is the case at all. I was told they are working on getting the time down to a 6 month range but that the average deployment time is 8-12 months. I am very excited about doing this however like you want to know the details up front. Good Luck in your endeavor. Teri
  5. Hello to everyone! I am looking for information on the Army Nurse Corps. Would others who have been down the military path recommend the ANC Reserves for a 43 year old civilian RN. I have wanted to do this for sometime now and am currently at a stage in life that Id like to give it a whirl but would love to hear some pros/cons from others who have been there?
  6. I too have an online Regents (Excelsior now) degree and can only think of one time that I was even asked where I recieved my degree. I dont think the program would be the way to go for some but if you are disciplined to motivate yourself to study and prepare yourself, it is the WAY to go. I have taken classes both online and in a classroom and remember more from what I have taught myself than I ever have from someone lecturing to me. As far as the hands on I was very apprehensive when I started as a new grad RN but made sure that the facility was providing a good orientation and have never regreted my decision to do the online program. I have done several travel nurse positions and it has been almost funny because through the years have had fellow co-workers say to me that they are glad to see me coming in because some of the other travelers must have gotten their degree online! I usually just smile and nod, and say good common sense, judgement and empathy are not things that are taught in any nursing program.
  7. Hi to all! I too am venturing into the great unknow re: career advancement. I have just recently filled out the UOP application but havent yet sent it i. I am really excited about the 1 class Q 5 weeks but am so reluctant about the $$$$. I filled out the FAFSA but dont know for sure if its totally dependable. Heck after going thru that application I was ready to say "forget it". When they notify you of your EFC or expected family contribution, not sure I understand it. Is that the total out of pocket that you have to pay for the year? Just dont want to be suprised witha huge bill that I cant afford. TIA for any advice abyone can offer. Teri
  8. Sorry for the misspellings, I didnt look t it until after I posted it. I have a cordless keyboard and sometimes I thinkif my cffecups in the way of the reciever it misses some signals. I guess I could give up coffee! NOOOOOOOO
  9. Well I guess i cant ever remember wanting anything else. Except for maybe a lion tamer Oh how I loved Lions!. I was in an awful situation in my early years and was removed from there to a foster home at the age of 5 along with my 3 year old brother. He is developmentally delayed from the repeated trauma to head from being beat. I really remember very little of those first few years except for that night that children services took us away and to the hopital. They were the nicest people I had ever seen. Luckily for me I was not kept and was taken to the foster home, have been told that thy felt that I had escaped most of the phyical abuse because I wuld always go and get under the bed.Now WHY would chldren services go ito any home 11 times before removing children is beyond me but I guess thats a whole different story. Anyway, bythe time I wa 7 I wa adopted by a wonderful family andtold them from the very beginning that I was going to be Julia the black nurse( anyone remember that show?), or the flying Nun. Well I have never learned to fly and of course was never going to be able to get that Nun thing down either LOL. So I did the nurse thing, however I still cant figure out the black part either. I guess some things are just out of our control. I did my LPN my Jr/Sr year of high school, thenlater went o for my RN. Not sure how or why but know that I was given the gift of insight and just knew that this was the profession for me. I often look back ov my life and choices Ive mae and the onethat I have EVER regretted is the nursing one. I gaduated from LPN school in 1980 and have had a very rearding career. Have worked ICU, Medsurg, travel nursing, several years in surgeryand also oncology. My problem is I cant say no to a jo offer and at ties am fiding myself in 3 jobs at once. Thats RAZY! But thats a part of nursing that is so wonderful, thre are sooo many options if you truly love what you do.
  10. Hi Lori, I am currently on assignment in South Carolina. Have nothing but GREAT to say re: this assignment. The recruiter is here in Charleston and the hospital is good too. Im with Millenia Medical and Kent is my recruiter. They have been fantastic with everything. Even helped me out of an apartment contract that I was in previously. The pay in SC isnt as good as up north but the environment more than m,akes up for it. Please feel free to email me with any questions at [email protected]. One of the other nurses I work with at hospital is also with Millenia and she is very pleased with them also. You must be VERY excited about moving to this area. What part of SC will you be in? Have a good day.
