Mothering?
The issue is Pride in their unit and themselves. For some reason the workforce doesn't understand that they own the issue. If you have a Unit Coucil (shared governance team) on your unit ask then to focus on creating a culture od respect and pride. It has worked for me.

Nurse hours per patient day
Look at the CA mandated Nurse-patient ratios, these are the same baselinr ratios the Magnet surveyors look for. In order to effectively judge your census you need some form of a acuity system.. because Med/Surg Unit are all a little different. If you facility uses Solucient data this can help you to compare with other facilities. At my current hosptial we use a paper acuity system that the shared governance team developed, On our Med[surg unit of 35 out Hours Per Patient Day(HPPD) is 9.26. 7a to 11P nurse patient ratio is 4-5 (if you start with 5, you are assigned a patient that wioll be discharged and if you start with 4 you get an admission) althougt it does always work exactly fair it focuses on being fair with the flow of patients. We have a CNA for each 7-10 patients and a Charge Nurse that serves as an Inteventionl and patient flow coordinator. There is also a Clinical Manager available when needed on the floor.

Thank you for the input. I recently changed the master staff plan for my unit. The nurses sill feel overwhelmed. I just wanted to valid numbers and than we will move on to looking at out nursing model based on a patient centered focus. Does anyone have a model care model to share????

Nurse-Patient Ratios
Looking for input on nurse patient ratios for med-surg floor. Currently 4-5 to RN (If nurse starts with 5, she is given 1 patient who will go home on her shift. If starts with 4 than will get an admission during shift). We have a charge nurse who has no patient assisgnment and is intervention and 1 CNA for every 7-10 patients and a Unit sec. This is a 35 bed unit. I understand that we are close to CA ratio numbers. Your input please.

Not giving up
hang in there! nursing is a hard job but sooooooo personally rewarding. there is nothing like making a real difference. i believe that nurses who leave the profession never were committed to our profession. continue to grow and accept responsible to mentor the next nurse. not everyone was meant to be a nurse, it is more than the pay.
