resperidol
Oh geeze, now ya'll have me concerned. I have a 12 yo daughter that is on Risperdal 0.75 BID along with bunches of other meds... She was under the care of a shrink (no disrespect intended, just easier to spell) for 8 years before we moved here.... no one here in the state will see her as she is MR and non-verbal and... I think I need to check into all of her meds now. Cheryl M

A&P2- what section first?
Thanks Jen! It's been 26 years since I was in school...but I'm thrilled at the opportunity to go. I guess I just am frustrated that I barely passed A&P1. I just got so discouraged and that's not anyone's fault but my own. I've been reading my book, I figure even if it's not where we start out, sooner or later we'll cover it :-)

A&P2- what section first?
Good luck to you with your entrance testing. We don't have that here at our Community College. I'm hoping to have my prerequisites done by the end of summer. I have to have my application in for the RN program by March. One of my teachers (Interpersonal Communications) offered to write a letter of recommendation for me and to assist me in completeing my application- we have to submit a whole "thingy" on why we should be accepted into the program. They also want work/volunteer history-well we've only lived here for a little over a year so I don't know many people and I have three special needs kids at home so I don't work....I do have a web site for students at our college with lots of links for Nursing Students...but that's about it. In our first semester of A&P. we went through chapter 1,2,3,4 then 1,5,6 then 7,8,9,17 the last two chapters we covered in about three hours......ugg. I love the website for the book, printed out the study outline, but the instructor we had skipped all over the place so they were almost useless. Hopefully the instructor I'll have this semester goes by the book much more-that was why I requested him. Good luck! Cheryl Moore

A&P2- what section first?
Thanks for all the responses. I appreciate them. I should have mentioned that we are using Hole's book. We skipped all around the first semester. I am getting so discouraged. I was able to partially memorize the stuff in A&P1, but trying to understand it got me into trouble..... not enough time... I barely scraped by with a C. When I spoke with our instructor, she told me to not to try to understand it, just memorize it and that it would come together once I was in the RN program. I am praying that this is so. If it isn't, I might as well go into Sociology. I see the different posts from people that are dissapointed that programs aren't more scientific, and I cringe. It makes me question my ability to achieve sucess in the RN program. Am I the only one that feels that way? I want to understand the why's, but right now all I can do is keep my head above water. Any imput is appreciated. Cheryl Moore

A&P2- what section first?
Christmas is all over and almost put up, so I'm antsy to get back to school (sick, huh). I'm taking A&P2 this next semester and I was hoping to find out what is usually taught first, so I can start reading and won't feel quite so lost at the start. I learned with A&P1, not to try so much to understand it, but to memorize it........ I just about didn't pass because I was spending so much time trying to figure it out. Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks! Cheryl Moore

Neat, funny poem for Nurses
The Ranks of a Hospital Surgeon: Leaps tall buildings in a single bound Is more productive than a train Is faster than a speeding bullet Walks on water Talks with God Internist: Leaps short buildings in a single bound Is more powerful than a switch engine Is faster than a speeding BB Walks on water if the sea is calm Talks with God if special request is approved General Practitioner: Leaps short buildings with a running start and favorable winds Is almost as powerful as a switch engine Can fire a speeding bullet Walks on water in an indoor swimming pool Is occasionally addressed by God Resident: Barely clears a picket fence Loses tug-of-war with a train Can sometimes handle a gun without inflicting self-injury Swims well Talks with animals Intern: Makes high skid marks on a wall when trying to leap buildings Is run over by a train Is not issued ammunition Dog paddles Talks to walls Medical Student: Runs into buildings Recognizes a train 2 out of 3 times Wets himself with a water pistol Cannot stay afloat without a life preserver Mumbles to himself Nurse: Lifts buildings and walks under them Kicks trains off the track Catches speeding bullets with her teeth and eats them Freezes water with a single glance The Nurse IS God!!!!

Pre-setting meds....
I'm not in the Nursing Program yet, but when I worked as a PCA in a group home with four residents, we would do their meds up early in the shift when it wasn't so busy and mark the cups and lock them up. It was against policy, but I don't know anyone that didn't do it....it was just a necessity and actually was safer than having to do it with all the distractions. We usually worked by ourselves and rarely double staffed. Just my 2 cents. Cheryl Moore

HELP!! 4th grade hygiene presentation!!
Here is one link that might help:http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/teachers_tools/ I tried Google for different approaches........didn't get a whole lot. One idea, remember those red little pills we took after we brushed our teeth? They showed the tartar that we had missed, this might be effective and fun for the kids.........just an idea. Good luck! I hate A&P!!!!!!
I am so glad ot know that it's not just me! I am so overwhelmed by A&P1!!! Our instructor goes through the book willy-nilly(not sure if that's really a word, but you get the idea.) I am scraping by with a C mostly due to the homework worksheets. I have picked a different instructor for A&P2 next semester-he goes by the book and the study guide. For the person that is going to take Chemistry 101-don't worry. I took Chemistry 113 this last summer so it was accelerated and after the third week or so I finally figured it out that it's mainly math......and formulas. I really enjoyed that course. I am so relieved to find out that not aceing A&P doesn't mean I won't get into Nursing or be okay. I come from more of a social worker background and trying to learn to think in more scientific terms is difficult. Thanks for listening!!! Cheryl Moore

How does death effect you?
I think if it's honest, then it's good to show some emotion when a patient dies. When my father died, it was comforting to see the nurses and others that had come to know him had tears in their eyes. He wasn't just someone in a bed to them. It really felt good to know that he had impacted them as well. I worked in a group home for a couple of years and we had residents die, most of them were DNR's. I have to admit while I felt a little sad, I missed them, I felt no need to cry. The relationship with the clients was very different. Now I am doing my prerequisites to become an RN and I hope that I will always handle situations with sensitivity and respect. I've seen that in the posts here. Ya'll are awesome!

First A&P exam a flop!!!
I am so glad to see that I am not the only one having a hard time in A&P 1! I take it at night and the class is 3 hours and 45 minutes long. After we take the break in the middle my brain is so full that I can't absorb any more information. It's all I can do sometimes not to just cry in class. It's so darned frustrating. I keep thinking that at some point this stuff will make sense, but it isn't happening yet. I've finally decided to keep trying and the worst that can happen is I have to take the class again next semester. It's just a lot of information thrown at us very, very quickly. At least I think so. Thanks for posting, it's nice to know that we're not alone in our struggles with a particular subject. Cheryl Moore
