Over the last decade I've seen some rather agressive backbiting. I've seen husband "stealing" among friends. I've seen nurses set up to be fired. Nurses can be ugly. I recently overheard a nurse take a students chair for herself and said,"She's just a student anyway." I promptly told that nurse that she is rude and reminded her that she was a student once also!
I think you handled yourself very well-all things considered. I have had sexual remarks made toward me in the past, so I can understand your anger. There will always be racist and sexist pigs out there. Just remain professional when dealing with them. Hold your head high. Be proud that you are strong enough to know ignorance when it speaks. I was thinking you could get some pamphlets on racism and hand them some teaching material. That's using your nursing skills!
It's been a while since I read about it. I don't know if we are thinking of the same one. I read online that the government was offering tuition forgiveness for a bachelor's and master's degree-if you promise to work in a rural setting for two years. I'll try to find the site again.
I have only worked in ICU for 2 years, worked med-surg and peds for 5 1/2 years prior. I have heard "I am better than You" more than once. I love it when something happens that I show up the "older" ICU nurses that didn't know what to do in a certain situation. They have learned repect for me as a result.
