Thank you all for your support. It is just so frustrating that I spent all that money to go to school and can't find a job. I really don't like where I'm working. We are treated like slaves not employees. Everyone talks about finding a new job, however they have years of experience and they are leaving one by one. It just not that easy for me. Hi emilysmos2, I have been sending my resume via internet all over. For example: Temple, CHOP, Jefferson, Chestnut Hill, Bryn Mawr, Lankenau, etc. My sister works at Crozar and she went to their HR department and the lady gave her a card and told her for me to apply on the internet - which I have done. I thought it was because I didn't have any experience, but all my friends have jobs in the hospital, as far as I know, I'm the only one that works in a nursing home. Just like anything else I believe it is who you know.

Hi Everyone, I have been working in a nursing home in PA for six months now and want out of there so bad. The state has been called to investigate this place at least six times since I have been there. Everyone keep telling me with a BSN that I shouldn't have a problem finding a job in a hospital, but I am. I am willing to take a job anywhere except where I am working now - but I have not had any luck. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hi Guys, Why did I ever go into Nursing? I can't believe the way other nurses treat a newbie. I'm so frustrated that I'm thinking about quitting and going back into Business Administration. The money is not all that great and I'm treated like I'm a bothersome to people when I asked questions. Yes to them my questions maybe small but to me to get my work done I need answers. Everyday between 11:00 and 1:00 PM the DON goes through our lab, appointment and telephone log books and give us homework to do. Sometimes the homework can be two pages long and she expect two nurses working on a 48 patients floor to get it done by 3:00 pm. I use to stay and try to complete mines until the other more experience nurse told me to go home - she said if I stay and do it they will continue to pour the work on use. I'm just so mad that I don't feel like I was properly trained and they load me up with all this work that it takes me at least 10 hours to complete. One day I stayed until 9:00 pm (mine you I work 7:00 a to 3:00 pm) trying to complete my work. We don't have an unit clerk or unit manager/supervisor so we do it all; setup appointment, cancels appointments, call the day before to verify the appointments, keep log on meals (how much the resident ate that day), go get supplies out of the basement if we run low, one of use sit in the cafeteria at meal time, etc, etc, etc.................. Our day never ends. If this what nursing is all about, please someone let me know becuase I'm ready to go back to Administration, becuase it just not worth it.

Well I was not asked to work on that unit again, however, read my new posting (Need Advice Again) about what they came up with now. I believe it had something to do with me declining to work on that unit. Thanks for asking.

Let me tell you the update on what happen at this crazy place I work at. Well I'm not working on the unit with 48 patient along. Matter of fact, I was told that I was going to be trained on that unit but it never happen. Anyway, my DON called me today and told me that my position which is 7p - 7a Sat and Sun is being eliminated and she is giving me 30 days notice. I was offered to work 7a - 3pm daily or pool. I have only worked on this job for almost 4 mos now and she is eliminating my position - I believe something is up. The thing is I took the position because I didn't want to work every day and working pool you don't get benefits. I don't know about other states, but it so hurt to find job in a hospital in Philadelphia becuase I have been looking since January 2008. I want to get out of LTC because I don't think I have enough clinical experience and the more experience nurses at this facility don't support you at all. I had 6 weeks of training and they believe that is enough I should know everything; however the paperwork still is a challenge for me. For example, I had to send a patient out and the supervisor didn't help me do the paperwork. I had to try to figure it out by myself. One of the LPNs did tell me which papers to copy out of the patient chart but the transfer form was one me. I'm really trying to find another job but it is hard. Any suggestions, I can't work the 7a - 3p and the pool doesn't give me benefits. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for your advice. I called and spoke with the DON and she stated that she will move me back to my old unit and let the more experience nurse work the heavy unit. But she also said that they are going to train me on the heavy unit because everyone is now going to be rotating. When I interviewed for this position, I was told that I will be working the acute care unit which only hold 32 residents. Now I learn today that I will be trained to work any unit in the facility. I decided to go to work tonight, however, I going to start looking for a new job. Several people that I work with told me to go to a hospital first and get some experience and then come back to LTC, but I always wants to work in geriatric, however, I believe I'm going to take their advice. It is a shame because I really like the residents and I believe they like me. They tell me all the time that I really care for them and I do more for them than the other nurses. If they wants something done and I'm just walking past their room, they call me to do it knowing I'm not their nurse. Again, thank everyone for you help. You guys are the best, I will let you know when I get that new job.

Hi Michelle, This is a 11-7 shift...but my thing is that most of the pts on this unit has dementia and wanders throughout the night. They are considering locking down this unit. Also, I was told by the LPN that 3 people fell last week and she had to come back the next day to do some late entries because it was just too much for her. This is really to much for one nurse. Another thing about this assignment is that I have never worked on this unit. So I don't really know anything about the patient, their treatments or meds they get. What had happen the nurse who use to work this unit quit after 5 years of service and I believe if I do this for them tonight they will stick me with this unit. I told her I was willing to help during the week on the 7-3 shift when it is two nurses on the unit, but not doing it by myself. Well come to find out she place me on the schedule tonight (11-7A) to do it by myself without letting me know. I so happen to find out my the week evening supervisor.

Thank you so much for your responses. However, I called in for my schedule for the weekend and I was told by last night supervisor that I will be working on that unit this weekend. I spoke with the DON last week when she asked me to go on that unit and I told her that I was uncomfortable working with 48 pts being that I'm a new nurse and just learning my way around the facility. She was find with it last week, now I find out that she placed me on the unit this week, becuase that LPN she had working last week stated to me that she will never work on that unit again. She siaid it is too much work for one nurse. What gets me is that this LPN has 10 years of experience at this facility. If she can't do it how do they think that I can handle all these patients. I'm going to pick up my check by noon today and have a talk with the DON one more time. If she says I have to work on that unit I think I should resign today, because I really dont feel comfortable working with all those resident by myself. Question: Would that be abandonment if I quit before I count with the nurse. I thought abandonment is when you have accepted the assignment and you walk out after you have count meds with the prior nurse. Please advise. I really appreciate you help in this matter.

By the way it will be me with 1.5 CNA. One CNA will help out with the other side of the floor as well.

Hi fatdaddy, Do you know of anyone that I can contact to get into CHOP? They have a lot of position posted on their website and I have applied to several of them (Nurse I), but I'm not getting any response. I ran into a girl that went to nursing school with me and she stated that she works there but she worked as a Nurse-aide during college. I believe that is how she got into CHOP. She said that they need nurses bad but I have sent several copies of my resume starting back in Nov. 2007, via website, and have not heard anything from them. If you know of anyone I can send it to directly, please let me know. Thanks.
