As a future nurse and nursing student in clinicals I have some concerns about the potential complications of IVs (peripheral-hand). My question is about one of the potential complications of IVs, which is air emboli, pulmonary emboli or infarction. If any signs and symptoms are going to manifest themselves would it be acutely (immediately), within hours or even within weeks or months even if the patient has cardiac problems. If they do not show any symptoms in weeks does this mean they will not have any of these complications as listed above from the IV therapy recieved (air getting into the veins)?
