What kind of Nurse does administrative work?
I have been a nurse for 1 year and have known since day 1 on the unit that I did not want to be a floor nurse. I am now approaching my 1 year mark and have been thinking real hard about what I really want to do. I have come to the conclusion that I want to do more of a desk/office job. I know, I know, then why become a nurse. I guess I was still confused and then after I was all done nursing just wasnt what I thought it would be. Soooo now that I am is there a field of nursing I can be I can be in the would allow me to do less bedside nursing and more office or managing? I just dont want to be responsible for a patient assignment and be short staffed and it seems to be everywhere in bedside nursing/ units.

Not Happy with Nursing~ Advice Please
HI All I have been a RN for 1 year now. I am so unhappy with my career choice and not sure which way to steer it to get the involvement or lack there of that I want. I currently work on a med/surg oncology unit. We are always short staffed, alot of the time we have a roaming huc that we share between 2 units and we are not allowed a cna unless our census is at least 8. I usually get 5-6 patients on my 12 hour shift with no recognition of acuity level. My unhappiness with my degree is that I always knew I wanted to be in a very personalized type of nursing, meaning a very one on one personal care with the patient. I want to be in a clinic I think ! I have been a medical assistant in the past. I feel that I would love to be in a private practice and teach prevention, possibly pre-surgical or case management? I feel myself leaning more towards a case management or administrative field. I am not able to give my patients good quality care, I can not spend the tiem with them that they need. We have all brought this to the managers attention but things never change. Moral on the unit is everyone for themselves, assignments are often unfair and not weighted fair, no one wants to help each other, and all new staff coming on quickly find out that we are always short and they quickly decide they dont like it either. I am not sure which way to turn in my career... I mean what should I be seeking as far as education in order to get to the kind of nursing I want. I am very unhappy that is all I know. Nursing is not at all the way I envisioned going to school working so hard, I am very disappointed. I have a second interview at the end of the month with an oncologist that needs an RN to manage his oncology patients. I have expressed in the first interview that I am still sort of a " new nurse" but they dont mind and have even asked me to interview with the new doc when he comes into town. I am hoping I get the position. I am also 39 and .... well my body hurts all over after 13 hours on my feet. UGHH so confused !!! I know some of you may have some strong feelings please be nice ..... LOL:nurse: but honest

Ideas for creating a recognition board
I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about how to create a team environment at work and use a display case/board to recognize our team. What kind of things have you seen displayed, or done to make everyone feel a part of the unit and more a team spirit. I suggested a display case to my manager and she agreed this would be a good idea. I also said it would be nice to create a sort of welcoming committee. Has anyone exp this ? Does anyone have any ideas?

Welcoming Nurses Committee
Hi Everyone I was woderring if anyone had any ideas as to how to develop a sort of welcoming committee? By that I mean like a gift basket of things that would be neat for new nurses joining our unit, a way to initiate them and make them feel a part of the unit. I was wodering how to go about doing something like this and where we could raise the money for it? I was thinking maybe the last girl could be responsible for making the welcome basket for the new girl etc.

University of Phoenix for BSN
Im sorry guys. I may have written my post wrong. I meant that my BSN will be 23,000 and probably the same for the Masters and I was estimating the toital would be around 45,000 when I am dont with my masters!. I know this is expensive and no I do not hav etons of money to spend however, considering that I am working full-time, and I do not have to be anywhere for class at a particular time, I do not have to pay for gas, I do not have to pay for all the books just a flat rate of 90.00 per class, No wear and tear or auto repairs, convenience of my program at my leisure, I can take up o 29 days off between classes or none at all, all classes are 5 weeks long by the time I get stressed the class is over. I just feel that there are alot of hidden costs also that we may not be looking at. I know this program is expensive compared to others but I feel for me it is conveinence and my ability to accomodate my family time and work with school. I am just questioning the thought of someone saying that the degree was scoffed at by HR. Of course I dont want ot do all of this and then feel insecure about where I got it from you know what I mean.

University of Phoenix for BSN
Hi All I am starting UOP on Sept 7th and was wondering I have seen the threads but haven't heard what people are experiencing in the workforce lately. Is UOP being scoffed at? Do you feel like HR dosn't look at your degree as prestigious as other ground campuses? Do you feel that it was way to easy? I am so afraid to get this degree and then be scoffed at while trying to advance and then be sorry I paid 45, 000 plus as I do plan on getting my Masters there also. Any input is appreciated.... thanks
