  1. I had a complaint against me the other day from a nurse from another hospital who happened to come into the ER. She was very upset that she had to wait for me to clean her minor abrasions (not even bad enough for stitches) as there was a code going on that was taking up my and the other nurses time. I did go in and clean and dress her wound and did try and make her happy but she was not going to be consoled. States that another nursing professional should get first priority. Excuse me for doing CPR on someone guess she just did not get it. Even went so far as to stand in her doorway and critique the nurses running back and forth getting meds and arranging for transport to another hospital for this critical patient. She even went so far as to call admin and say that she advised the docs she worked with to not come in to this ER even if they were dying. I got called in and had to defend myself. Sure makes you re think your priorities.
  2. I am encouraged and discouraged to know that so many of you are experiencing the same things I am. A hostile work environment is never easy. We are in a high stress environment without the added stress of knowing that on a daily basis you are going to be treated so horribly. As a new nurse working in an Emergency room I knew that it would not be easy but did hope that my coworkers would step up and teach me instead of ridiucule me when I did not know or understand the proper way of doing something. Since I got hired in July there have been 3 more nurses hired. All have gone thru and are going thru what I have. We try to be supportive of each other but since we are on different shifts its not easy. I am trying to tough it out but honestly I have thought of leaving for a different career. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that my toughest challenge in the health care field would be from difficult coworkers who thrive on making someones life miserable for their own pleasure.
  3. I know how you feel. I am a new grad RN and was hired in the Emergency Room. I was warned that nurses eat their young and boy is that true. I cringe everytime I walk thru the door. I am learning lots but at what cost. I hear the nurses making fun of me and I think they thrive on making me feel bad when I ask for help I think its because I am a nontraditional student. (I am almost 50). I will get thru this and hopefully If I work with a new grad can remember what it felt like and not make them feel like I did. Just don't let them discourage you. You sound like a very caring person and that is wha the health care field needs. Make a difference and hopefully we can make a change.
  4. I am a 3rd semester nursing student. And I can tell you that the RN's at the hospitals are great. I am in a PBL (Problem based learning program and it sucks!!!) The RN's at the hospital teach me way more than I am learning in College. They are very sympathetic and understanding that a PBL learning situation is not the best.
