  1. At our hospital we refer to those orders as "blanket orders", they are illegal and we are working on educating our doctors about getting away from this practice. If we do have such an order, we get a list of the meds from the patient and we have to call the doctor and go over each med and dosage before we can write the order. I hope this helps.

Thank you Jolie for your response. Were you placed on bedrest your entire pregnancy? Also to the next reply: they did both the abd. ultrasound and trans lady partsl ultrasound because we were really trying to find out the sex of the baby but the position was not working with the abdominal ultrasound.

I am sorry, let me clarify. They told me my cervix was shortened at about 3cm and should be about 4cm. However this could be just part of my anatomy, but they want to do another ultrasound in one week just to be sure that there is no funneling which then I may need a cervical cerclage. I think that I am just so worried that my mind is going in a hundred directions.

I am 21 weeks pregnant and just had an ultrasound. Everything was normal until they told me my cervix is about 3cm and may be funneling. They rescheduled another ultrasound for next week, but I am just beside myself worrying. I need some information please.
  5. Is anyone a legal nurse consultant and do you enjoy your work. There is a 21 hour course where I live to become certified and it sounds very interesting, but I wanted some real opinions. thanks
  6. Thank you all for your advice and comments. I do get good feedback from my co-workers and my manager and I do think in a way that puts more stress on me because I feel that if I were to forget something or make a mistake they would change their opinion of me. I am looked upon as a resource and I feel that I have such a high standard to maintain. I am proud to be a nurse and I know I give the best care I can, but I just cannot leave work at work. I do think however that I am going to change once the baby arrives, (but that is 6 months away) and I am only coming back part-time, it just really frustrates me to see these new-grads come in and they are so calm and laid back, I guess it is just my personality. Thanks again all, amy
  7. I have been a nurse for 2 1/2 years now and I still go home at the end of each shift worried that I forgot to do something. I know at work that I give the best care I can and that I always check myself and meds at least three times, however each day I go home worried, so worried sometimes that it makes me sick to my stomach. I even call the unit to check on my patients or listen to report. I can't continue living like this, my husbanc and I are expecting our first child in march and I am counting down the days till I am off. Is this job really worth all the stress??? Is there anyone else out there like me or am I just too paranoid? Any advice would be appreciated
  8. I work 7A-7P and get paid my hourly wage for the 12 hr shift, anything over 40hrs/wk I get overtime pay. Our night shift differential just increased to an extra $4.00/hr and we get a $2.00 extra differential on weekends.

I work on an orthopedic floor and I have noticed that some of my patients get an annoying case of the hiccups after surgery (this can be very painful for our back surgeries). Does anyone have any remedies that would be helpful. I am open to anything and so are my patients. Thanks
  10. I really like the patient population. For the majority of these patients the surgery is elective and they must be pretty healthy in order to have th surgery in the first place. Also, most of the patients are very motivated to get up and moving and rehabilitated. The three biggest issues I see most often is pain control, nausea, and constipation and I'll take those any day over breathing diffuculties or heart problems.
  11. I graduated last May and we took the NLN exam as a class last March. When our results came back, we were told the same thing as you that this was an indicator of how we would do on the NCLEX. I was absolutly devastated because I only scored in the 47th percentile (and I was an A/B student graduating with honors) and I thought I was doomed on the boards. Well I am very happy to say that I passed the NCLEX the first time and had to answer only 76 questions. Your score is great and I am sure you will pass the NCLEX, I personally did not feel however, that the NLN exam was a true indicator of how one will do on their boards, but this is only my opinion based on my experience. Good Luck!
