  1. Here in montreal in my institution availability was cut and getting full time positions is not easy to start off with, on top of that positions werecut on my unit and beds technically closed for surgerywhile some beds opened in medicine with actually less staff. The shortage is real, but not always as a result of not having enough nurses but not offering full time posts or enough posts period. WE are working short for the budjet but have people willing and eager to come in. Explain that one :Melody:
  2. Hi I am curious as to how your unit works. WE have been trying to bring L&D with post parttum but many of us are unclear as to how it practically works. Is that what you guys are doing?? It seems that OB nurses are great att eam work (the ones I work with more than any other unit in my institution at least). :chuckle

  4. HI there I am in the same boat I have been doing post partum as well as float through hospital and now I am beggining to orient in labor and delivery. I must say it is scary but there are always experienced nurses available for help. Do you guys have interns or residents we don't so it's only the nurse who cares for this patient and the MD is called at the last moment and hopefully they get there in time.Let us know how it goes over time Nancy
  5. Being a nursing student when I first came across C-Diff I didn't know what to expect. Being nervous that day, I walk into the hospital and before I even get the chance to take a look at the chart I am asked to get my pt on the commode. Cleaning out the commode is what got to me, and I ended up losing my breakfast to it. Thankfully I know the good old Vicks trick now, just apply a bit around nose and your pretty much good to go. I have been perfectly ok with C. Diff since. One thing I can't get used to is teeth EWWE especially false teeth. There is something wrong with having a set of teeth in your hand. Thankfully I don't get the "dry heaves" with it, just a reevaluation of "why in the world am I doing this"? Have a good one :) Nancy
  6. I personally prefer the use of baby powder though it is not available at every hospital. I find the baby powder great for warm days and a diapheretic pt. since it does have an absorbing quality. If I had the option of one or the other I would ask the pt if possible which they would prefere, or assess whether they could use the moisture of a lotion; or the absorbance of the powder since skin either too dry or to moist is not good.
  7. Well, I don't know if there are any reputable programs that I have heard of that worked like that, but what I can suggest is since you already have a degree you can apply to an intensive nursing program such as the one at John Abbott College to earn your DEC in nursing. Once you've completed the program for your RN then university of Ottawa has a nurse practioner certificate program, or a post RN BScN / nurse parcticioner program. I speak highly of John Abbott's Intensive Nursing program, and have only heard the best of university of ottawa. I know it is overwhelming looking at different programs and how long it takes to get where you want to be. I would suggest taking a look at what classes are offered for what program, and then find out which program is best for you to excell in your carrier. Best of luck :roll
