Hello all, I am soongoing to start working in the ER at a community hospital in my hometown. I have previously ony ever worked Neonatal ICU and briefly Ped ICU, any advice or words of wisdom? I am pretty nervous but very excited too to start something new and challeging!
  2. I work in the NICU and have had many a dream about work, like not seeing a whole med kardex until the end of the shift and missing a ton of meds, dropping a baby (AAAAGH!!-more like a nightmare), having to work on an adult floor and not having a clue as to what to do, the best by far though was my dream that instead of babies in the isolettes they were all puppies!!
  3. Don't feel stupid at all, it never hurts to try something different, and if that something just isn't for you take it as a learning experience. I was considering leaving NICU for the ER myself--to expand on my skills, try a different kind of nursing etc....then realized I would honestly miss the babies too much-- Its not all roses of course but it can be so rewarding and challenging (which I love). Don't be so hard on yourself
  4. Thanks everybody for your advice/insight. I have applied for a couple of ER positions in some area hospitals--so wish me luck!:thankya:
  5. How did you find the transition going from just neonates to pretty much everything under the sun? Also is ER pretty hard physically--I mean lots of lifting etc--I wouldn't think it would be too bad not sure........?
  6. I curently work in a level three NICU (been working level 3 for almost 3 yrs) and lately have been feeling the need for a change, maybe has something to do with the fact that over the past year 7 of the babies I have taken care of have passed away--now mind you they were all withdrawl of care r/t poor prognosis but I am finding that i am really starting to bring work home with me --think about it all the time and not in a positive way, thinking that I need a change, to work somewhere else for a while. Anyone else feel or have felt the same way, just needed to vent a bit. Thanks
  7. need some advice.... i have been working in the nicu now for almost three years and am thinking about going to work in the er-the nicu is a great place to work but i want to expand on my skills and see interesting things-- i realize that they are two totally different worlds (part of the attraction to the er)--was wondering if anyone out there might have any words of wisdom or advice on making such a transition..... thanks!!
