  1. its not all about me. i would love to help people and provide a better life for my family (i have NO KIDS though). i want what i do to be meaningful. so being a docor or a nurse is fine by me. i work hard in everything i do so i know i could do it. i know that if i go into nursing i can become a physician with a masters or a doctorate. but if i go the medical school route, id be in a ton more debt with no work until i graduate.
  2. your probably right.
  3. i'm 24 years old and i'm 1 semester away from finishing up the prereqs for nursing.... or... i'm 24 years old and i'm 4 semesters away from finishing up the prereqs for medical school... my mother was a nurse and she worked hard for her RN-BSN. she was only a nurse for about 6 months before she died in the hospital she worked at. i was about 16 and i was down the hall from her room when it happened. since then my father killed himself and i had a little sister die of cancer. so all i have is 1 little sister left, my baby sister. it was my dream to help her through college and to make sure she went through it smoothly (sorta like no one guided me). speaking of, at the age of 18 i decided to go to a school for digital arts. biggest mistake of my life. im 25k in debt. i know how to run a multimillion dollar studio...but good luck making a living off of recording other peoples music. i wish i had someone to talk me out of going to that school. so here i am, with a 300$ bill every month, 25k in debt, with 1 or 4 semesters to go. if i continue with nursing, i'll complete my ASS degree by the fall of 2009. if i transfer into the university, i'll just be taking the mcat exam by the fall of 2009. everyone tells me that this debt should not hold me back, and should not be the reason why i jump into nursing, just so i could start working faster. on the other hand i would rather enjoy being a nurse (or course i would eventually work my way up to a NP or higher). any advice?
  4. it is unprofessional. i smoke too but im not going to go into a PN program ready to battle any instructor that points out my nasty habit. i understand she gave you some harsh punishment but you were aware of how she felt, and you snitched on another student. write the paper.
  5. oooooooh, i see. interesting.
  6. ok, so you move to another state. assuming you land a job immediately, would your pay be cut until you get the state license? do you have to wait to get your residency in the state before you can get your license?
  7. if you graduate with an ADN, and then want to move to another state, is there a state exam you must pass or are you covered under the national exam?
  8. my bad :trout: i got trouted. ok now i feel better. but are there any states where you cant do that? and can you sign up for any online program that offers a bachelors after that (of course it must be accredited).
  9. im worried that i wont be able to work in california as an ADN nurse.
  10. does anyone know if you can work in california with an associates in nursing after you take the national exam for your license??????
  11. im in tucson, arizona. im done with the prereqs as of this summer. everywhere has a waiting list 2 years long, so im graduating community college with an associates in liberal arts. im gonna pay about 10-15k to go to nursing school in phoenix (apollo college), complete 3 semesters there and graduate with my AS in nursing and get my RN. then im gonna move back to california, work with my associates up to a bachelors. hopefully by then i can apply to medical school after i have the pre-med courses done. if not ima get my NP.
  12. my advice would be to move out of alabama simply because its alabama :lol seriously though, get situated in your career before you start making plans to buy something big like a house. some people work for years to get up to 45/50k. but by that time they have saved and bumped up thier credit.
  13. depends on what area you live in, some places are in dire need of nurses, some arent. it also depends on your amount of experience. sounds like you have job offers but not enough experience, and you might be expecting too much based off of little to no experience. your not gonna become a millionaire overnight.
  14. im actually from san francisco and your absolutely right. but i did read that you can start out at about 60k in san francisco. in san jose you can make up to 70k starting out. but good luck finding an apartment under 1000$ a month. thats just basic rent.
  15. thats where you assist in making the last moments of someones life more comfortable. but yes i did forget about that. theres also retirement home nursing. psychiatric nursing....theres a few that i forgot about actually. wow.
  16. i know that there are private offices that you could work at, as well as clinics. but those are just hospitals on a smaller scale (but at least they smell better and are in locations closer to more fast food places for lunch....j/k).
  17. damn im a painter/carpenter and last year i got a 150$ bonus. but...you guys make way more money than me...so....
  18. well, a nurse practitioner is a mid level physician since one can prescribe and diagnose and refer patients to a specialist (i think you can also sew lacerations). i heard that the nurse practitioner position is good becuase it allows you to move around. also, once im done with my prereqs, is it true that i can contact local hospitals, and they would hire me as a low level technitian and put me in one of thier alotted seats in the nursing program (assuming i sign a contract to work with them after i graduate?)?
  19. this thread scares the crap out of me.
  20. awe damn, thank god for this response :lol thank you! i dont feel young, i feel like time is running out for me. and yes i am aware that nursing school is very competetive. im only gettin done with my prereqs and im starting to see that already, people start treating you differently once you ace an exam. and yeah im gonna go for the masters. i want to be a midlevel physician one day as a nurse practicioner. kids though :) perdiatrics.
  21. theres another thread about the nursing shortage and they were saying how there practically is no shortage. but i remember about 6 years ago my mother became a nurse and it was like her life started over completely, she had so many opportunities. every nurse i talk to recommends nursing, i have to cousins that are MD's and they said if they could do it again, they would have become nurses.
  22. with an associates and registry? or LPN with certification?
  23. im a 24 year old male and im finishing up my prereqs for the nursing program here at my community college (they have an AAS program). i work full time and i own my own business as well as attend classes full time. this next semester im going in anatomy/physiology. i aced all bio and chem classes easily. okay, for the Q's. what will i start out with as a nurse with an associates degree? ive been told i could make as much as a nurse with a bachelors. also, will i be the lowest on the totem pole when i begin workin in a hospital if i only have an associates (becuase you can become an RN with an associates here in arizona). also, im hearing alot about nursing programs everywhere being unfair to the students. i have been told that once im accepted into the program, my financial aid would stop until i took my first exam. if i fail the exam, i lose my financial aid and im out of the program (or is this just a "weeding" process?). and...are there going to be ANY nursing jobs in the coming years? i keep hearing no, but i see so many people getting into it it makes me wonder. :)
  24. yeah i been asking people this same question. im going to apply in the spring of '07 when my prerqs are done. some people tell me that with my gpa i should get right in, and if i do have to wait it would be a semester at the most. im in tucson arizona and the community college has night/day and weekend programs. i was planning on working while i go but people tell me thats damn near impossible.
